hi everyone

I’ve had extremely painful tummy with boating for so long now I can’t remember when it actually started.

I think I’ve now found the problem is lactlose 😩I know I need it for the rifaxamin I take but they say there is nothing else they can prescribe. Has anyone else suffered like this?my tummy is so swollen I look pregnant and it’s causing me so much pain.

Thank you

Marie

You need to take the lactulose in combination with Rifaximin to prevent/treat symptoms of HE/Hepatic Encephalopathy. When you say you have painful bloating can I ask if you are moving your boweks regularly? 3 to 4 times a day would be the aim. If constipation occurring you may need an additional laxative too.

Has your swollen tummy actually been examined by a doctor just to make sure you aren't getting fluid build up.

hi Katie

thank you for your reply. Yes I’ve been to the doctors many times pain and that they have felt like to me and I have had scans. Before my consultant passed away, he said stop it for two weeks and see if the pain goes and then start taking it again and then at least we know what it is he said some people do find it really painful. The problem is I never got to see him again as he sadly passed away so I did what he said and it worked I was pain-free. I am now back to taking it and I’m guessing it must be too harsh for my stomach. I just wondered if anyone has had any alternative to this one? It’s really getting me down now.

Im also confused about having hepatic encephalopathy.is it very common? Aside from rifaximin what else do people take?does anyone else see a neurologist? What kind of things to people get confused with mine is dates and organising. Some days are worse than others it comes in waves.I think from what I got told that they don’t really understand how it can affect the brain they just know it does is that correct?

Thank you

Marie 😊

My hubby has HE, he gets very confused over many things - simple instructions, directions, verbal amd written information. He loses track in conversations, mumbles when speaking, struggles with concentration, has sleep problems and is so slow in all his movement and actions.

He is on Lactulose and Rifaximin and when he saw his liver consultant last week she suggested starting him on lo-la ( L-ornithine L-aspartate) which I believe has been used in other countries for a while but is fairly new here. We just need to see if our local health board will prescribe.

He doesn't see anyone other than liver doctors.

Can I just ask, has your diet changed much, are you drinking enough water, how was your liver cirrhosis diagnosed and what stage are you at?

it maybe you you sensitive to lactulose . My mum used lactulose to help constipation problems and everytime she would get bloating from it. She changed to different constipation relief and that stopped bloating.
