hi this is probably a stupid question , but is it ok to use hair dye and perfume, I just wonder if the chemicals could enter the skin causing issues for the liver, toxins in the dye and alcohol in the perfume, I’m sorry if this is a daft question, but I really want to check that it is safe, thanks in advance xx
Hair Dye and Perfume: hi this is... - British Liver Trust
Hair Dye and Perfume
I dye my hair too and have been concerned that this okay to do.
Hi sophia.Well I can remember my liver nurse, saying to me,to only use alcohol free deodorant and mouthwash.......so I'm assuming that's the case for hair colourings......
I may be wrong, but best to check with your own medical team, better to air on the side of caution.
My best. Chris
oh really Chris, I didn’t even think by about deodorant , mmm I really will need to find out for sure. It’s a bit of a worry tbh , thank you for your help xx
I've done both, colour my hair every 8 weeks or so, not a problem but I've given up being paranoid about much now. To be fair I've never asked about it but if you need your mind putting at rest then I'd double check x
That's my take on it too. The feel good aspect of having my hair done really takes my mood up and helps me look forward to the future and enjoy like more. Its such a simple pleasure that I would hate to lose it. Perfume? I adore it. I have spent a small fortune on my perfumes. I am 67. A widow with Nash cirrhosis, diabetes, struggling to lose weight, my material pleasures are few these days so I would be so sad to have to give them up.
totally agree, we can do as much as we can to help our livers , but our mental state has to come into it as well, it’s true that a little pleasure can be good for the soul, if I had to walk around letting my hair grow out to it’s natural shade of grey it would make me feel depressed and down, and that’s not good for anyone no matter what illness they have, I’m sorry I raised the question I feel like I have put a question out there that may have worried people , take care lovely, im also type 2 diebetic and have spent a bomb on perfumes lol xx
I cannot bear the thought of not dyeing my hair.
Hi, I’ve had liver transplant and continued to get my hair coloured both pre & post transplant. I’ve even compared colours with liver consultant. My transplant was alcohol related, I’ve never had any issue dying my hair.
hi I changed my hair dye to one with no ammonia not sure if that’s any better but was worried about chemicals.
I’ve started buying a health shop deodorant and haven’t purchased anything with chemicals. I just get a few highlights so it’s not going all over the scalp like a dye and seeping into the root. I have heard of people using the dyes from the health shops though. I’m using alcohol free mouthwash also and try to just use something without chemicals for moisturiser.
Being perfectly honest I’ve not been well enough to wear makeup, perfumes & the hair is mostly natural now but on occasion I do get a spark of trying to make myself look nice and try to make a bit of effort. It does make a difference sometimes to look a bit brighter.
Reading up on a lot of articles etc…chemicals or anything like that should be avoided so that is what I am trying to do personally. If you adore your perfume you could spray a little on your clothes perhaps.
On the other side of things, we could think about the food & water we consume which seems to be all full chemicals anyway even veg grown in the ground. It’s a minefield when you think about it and the fact is we have to consume it to live. It all makes no sense. We’ve poisoned the earth and are now poisoning ourselves.
So, no matter what one does we are all getting a good dose of chemicals unfortunately so do what you got to do to protect your mental health I say. Just avoid what you can.
All a very personal decision and you’re not alone. Good on you for the positive attitude. It is not a stupid question but a very honest one.
Remember you’re a beautiful human being regardless so keep shining!
Best wishes.
Hi Sophia, I avoid chemicals and was told by my Mum (who had PBC) that hair dye and nail varnish were two of the worst things for your liver. I stopped having my hair dyed when I was diagnosed and limit nail varnish to special occasions. Grey hair was very trendy a few years ago so that as great. It also saved me a fortune! However, it’s a balance between physical and mental health. What’s the point in living longer if you feel worse. I’ve embraced my grey, got lots of compliments and wouldn’t go back, but the growing out stage was hard. I did go very short when it reached a certain point. I also can’t bear getting my toes out for summer without nail varnish. We all do what we can to protect our livers and try not to worry about the rest. There are no bad questions on here.
oh really, I suppose I’m not surprised, what a shame though, I love nail varnish esp on my toes , I wear it all the time, I will do as others suggest and only wear at special occasions, I might cut my hair short and let it grow naturally grey, I might wear a wig for that stage though, they do some nice ones now , my friend wears one and honestly it looks so real , I’ll look at the positive in all of this, I used to absolutely hate dying my hair lol xx
I am just the same as Readlots. I have embraced the grey, wear nail polish on special occasions and on toes in the summer lol. I spray perfume towards clothing or on a scarf but again only on special occasions. I also agree that life is for living and you need to do what makes you happy 😊
Color that hair if you want. Those chemicals will not affect the liver. Color and enjoy!
