Fibrosis 15.8 kPa - Appetite and Weight Loss

Recently found out that methotrexate prescribed to my dad for rheumatoid arthritis has caused severe fibrosis. For the last few years he has been losing weight and had many investigations and none of the doctors figured it out. Finally we know. Turns out he never even had rheumatoid arthritis (for which he was given methotrexate) so it is all a big mess. His symptoms are appetite loss which has resulted in severe weight loss (muscle wasting etc) and also his short term memory is not great. That could also be his age (he is 78) or the residual affects of methotrexate in his body. He is reasonably active and goes for 2km walks most days. His ALT, AST and GGT are elevated but not wildy. He finds it tough to have more than 1 full size meal a day.

The doctors have given him Evion (Vitamin E) and Ursocol 300 which is Ursodeoxycholic acid both twice a day. Does anyone know how long these medicines / vitamins take to work? Can someone of my dad's age improve from this stage of cirrhosis / fibrosis of the liver? Would appreciate any thoughts. Thank you so much - this forum is very helpful!

Hello there..Just regarding dads appetite, sometimes its better to have something to eat ,little and often....rather than one larger meal.....I found it better to have smaller snacks than one big meal.

Also just wondered if dad has muscle wasting, could you maybe speak with his gp,to see about some nutritional protein drinks/shakes?.

I was given on prescription from when I left hospital, ensure plus shakes, there are several out there, inc fortisip.

My best.Chris
