I'm new to all of this but am already decompensated. I'm still waiting to talk to the nutritionist and am struggling with what foods I should avoid. I know about salt and sugar but do I also need to avoid fats? I've lost a ton of weight, had a grilled cheese sandwich yesterday and had stomach pain afterwards. I'm also Type 1 diabetic. I have all of the symptoms of cirrhosis - itching, belly fluid, weight loss, extreme fatigue, nausea and vomiting. Kind of a mess.

New to Cirrhosis
Bacon, don't lose faith. I was decompensated for the first two years fir my cirrhosis diagnosis but I turned it around to compensated for the last four. I still have my 6mthly reviews and scans but things have stayed the same. I got a lot of nutrition advice from trusted sited like this one. And other Liver websites, they would certainly help whilst you are awaiting appointment.
Dear Bacon123,
This is a question that your own health care professional is best placed to answer, as only they have access to your medical records.
We suggest talking this through with your own doctor or health care professional in the first instance.
It can be really challenging to make lifestyle changes. Here are the links to information on the British Liver Trust website about diet, which you may find useful

I see you are from the USA, most primary care offices can guide you before seeing the specialist, Most docs in the USA ask their patients to follow the mediterranean diet, get you a med. cook book.
