Dear Friends, When I initially came here it was regarding Portal Hypotension, etc.,, and Many Thanks to those here who took such a kind interest. I return with the news that I have colorectal cancer (Ascending) (I never did like lifts) Today, I received a letter from the consultant Anaesthetist, during our meeting, he mentioned that I have Neutropenia and Pantopenia. The list of eight medical conditions, I shall leave out, unless ask for. My BP was 186/88, heart rate 190, and my peak flow was 350.

Chest clear, sturations 98 and no signs of peripheral odema.He then said that my haemmoglobin level was now 124 and transferrin saturation index of 15 pc; these were taken a few days pre appt.. Renal function is ok., Medication list is low: Asprin, salbutamol, and Ferrous Fumarate.

I had previously had an inron infused blood transfusion. (May) He said I was very pale He then stated that he would refer me to his colleagues to see if I qualify for further IV iron. He will then see if I qualify for further IV, and then we can proceed with surgery with the recommendation that I go to high dependency, post op as I am a challenging case.

MY G.P cannot 'phone me in over a week. Am I seeing some anomolies? Or just confused? What if they will not allow the transfusion?. I am not usually this dim (But who could blame me LOL. I need to prepare things for those around me, as I do not want them to be hurt and distressed) I wish each of you a pleasant weekend. I would not mind, but I recently recovered from covid and a v high fever. I hope that I do not make a fuss Jon

Hi Jon,

I'm sorry to hear about your new diagnosis but in some respects at least you have a bit more info over what could be causing the issues you were having.

The colon cancer itself may result in some blood loss through your stools which may be contributing to your low iron saturation and heamoglobin. The cancer may also reflect in some of the abnormalities with the blood cell counts you are seeing too, the neutropenia and pancytopenia reported to you. With the cancer being in the colon it may affect how you absorb nutrients, which can affect how well some of these blood products are developed in the body. Indeed the cancer itself could also be a contributing factor.

I dont really have any experience of cancer so cant really offer much more from an experience front. I just know the above from some of my experiences with liver and bowel disease and the issue that come from those. But given where the cancer is, and what it can cause, there is a little overlap. Hopefully though this will at least help maybe clarify some possible reasons why you are seeing the results you are and possibly prompt some questions to ask your consultant when you next see them. I'm sure now they have this diagnosis you'll be getting quite a bit of attention from your hospital medical teams.

I am sorry to hear this too. And I’m saddened that your GP hasn’t been in touch. Recently I heard of a case where a friend couldn’t get a GP apptmt and phoned 111, and they got them an apptmt with their practice. You deserve a plan and treatment options. Dont wait for them to call you. Good luck!

Sorry to read your post. I wouldn't try the Surgery again as this may cause you more anxiety. As suggested, try 111 and explain your feelings and worries. Please take care.

So sorry to hear you have been and are still going through so much trauma within your body. I agree with Kristian's comments. I had colon cancer a few years ago with surgery and chemo and yes the blood loss is more than likely from the tumour so the sooner it is removed the better. I wish you all the best for a speedy recovery.
