I’m 29 years old, I’ve never drank however I’m currently overweight since giving birth two years ago.
My liver enzymes have been high for a few years, I had a scan a year ago it was clear.
My GGT is 216, ALT 98, AST 74, ALp 236
So my bloods are elevated but my scans we’re clear a year ago? I’ve been having very itchy rash like hives fed times a week this month and I’m bit worried. My doctor won’t do anything because my scan is clear. Should I just accept it if my scan was clear or should I question and take it further ? I don’t know if I’m being dramatic or worrying for no reason

It is always wise to be safe and rule out any possible issues. I don't know much about your figures, I never wanted to know mine so I'm sure someone else will know if they may be a little high or moderately high. Obviously there are other liver problems besides alcohol damage, for me it is Hepatitis C, (there are a few Hep diseases) there is autoimmune, damage from blood clots, even medication or supplements, but for a lot of people NAFLD (Non Alcohol Fatty Liver Disease) is a concern.
I put it down to modern lifestyle, no time to prepare healthy food, eating on the go, especially when your day revolves around a toddler or family. Plus ready made foods are everywhere. It is only when you have a problem and take a look at some labels at the ingredients that you notice the high salt, sugar and fat content.
I know what it was like when my children were small and my wife never seemed to get 20 minutes to herself. I know it is time consuming but, making some fresh meals, eating healthily (not dieting, just eating better home prepared food) and finding a little time for yourself to do some exercises, walking, even swimming, my grandson started swimming when he was 2 and he used to cry when we made him leave the pool .
Then when you go back to see your doctor, he/ she will see that you are taking these figures seriously, making lifestyle choices to help your liver and help yourself. Then ask if there are any more tests that could rule out causes for elevated blood levels.
A lifestyle change may be enough to get your numbers back where they belong, but any further tests would help and also ease any anxiety you may have.
The mediterranean diet is highly recommended. I can recommend smoothies made from banana, blueberries and kale, also porridge is a great way to start the day.
Anyway, just wanted to say hi and welcome, hope you will stay, keep us updated, join in with the chat, light humour and support.
Hello, Thank you so much for your great advice, I can defiantly agree my diet hasn’t been good since having kids I’m always eating left overs or ordering a takeaway, I’m back to eating clean and will be looking into the Mediterranean diet.
I do think it’s because of my lifestyle as my scans we’re all clear so it makes sense.
Thank you so much, feel less anxious just reading your response!
Mothers always put their childrens needs above their own, it is so easy at the end of a tiring 15 hour day to be too tired to cook for yourself. That is when we tend to fall back on crisps, chocolate and fast food, to be honest, comfort food is always delicious 😋 but it slowly causes problems, and it adds to our fatigue.
It is important that you make some "Me time" .Start the day with some gentle stretching exercises and try to bring a little dancing or exercise into all those jobs that take up your day. If you have someone to watch the family in the evenings you could find an exercise class like the cycling to music classes (which are fun especially with a friend) it also gives you a little break. Recharging your mind will help with the physical fatigue. During the day keep music on whenever you can and dance around while you vacuum, fold clothes, make some smoothies or some chicken salad. My wife makes home made soup, no E numbers, no salt just vegetables and when it is cool she will freeze it having enough for 8 or 10 meals, which can be defrosted and warmed in a microwave for a fast, filling yummy healthy meal.
But at some point, return to your doctor later just as Ken suggests, a blood test in the future may show significant improvements.
I would try a good clean diet for six months - plenty of cookbooks are available for purchase, many recipes are online, etc and then get tested again and you might be just fine. The fact that the scan was clean is excellent news, take comfort from that!
I am NOT a doctor and this is not in any way professional advice. Always listen to your doctor and not someone like me on the internet.
Hi Raya, I’d go to the doctor and ask for a referral to a liver specialist if you’re worried. You know your body and if something doesn’t feel right then get it checked out. Ask if they’ve checked for autoimmune conditions like Kakey suggests. Take care of yourself
I have had high liver enzymes for decades. Went to several doctors and they never figured out why. Had many scans, liver biopsy, etc. all normal. I just carried on with my normal life but got blood tests regularly. Five years ago was put on prednisone and put on a lot of weight and ended up with NAFL. I went off prednisone, lost weight and my fatty liver has improved a lot but my enzymes are still high - GGT in 300 range sometimes 400. The others similar to yours. I have terrible itching and fatigue but still don’t what causes the elevated enzymes and I will be 81 this month. I have no answer for you but wanted you to know you can live with these enzyme levels but you need to be monitored closely. I only noticed symptoms the last 3 years. Your liver was damaged and we may never know why, maybe check family history, they did a genealogy test on me.Good Luck!
Hi there Raya. As mentioned by Trust, we cannot explain results since we are not medically qualified (and we don't know anything about you either medically). However, the readings are suggestive of something liver related and as suggested above, it would be good to ask your doc to investigate autoimmune conditions, since there are 3 different ones. I have one of them. They should be able to check if you have autoantibodies present. Even if it isn't that, then at least they can rule it out. I personally would persist since itching like this is horrible to live with and rather than worrying it is something serious, it might not be. Either way, please persist. All the very best.
The numbers are showing some mild-medium inflammation and need to be explained. GGT is found in the bile ducts, so the inflammation appears to be the whole Liver with ALT and AST raised too.
Having a good scan is great news, but your doctor needs to do some more investigation.
