Why has my body started having a weird odour all the time? I can really smell it and it’s a little worrying

Hi, have you been diagnosed with liver issues?I asked about medication because my partner has occasions where he has an odour caused by this but you should talk to your gp about it. Best of luck, K

What is your liver diagnosis? If you have cirrhosis with portal hypertension there is a condition called foetor/fetor hepaticus which causes a sweet/musty or slightly faecal smell that can be emitted in your breath and/or leaching from the skin and is due to toxin build up.

Are you on any medication to help you get rid of toxins? Things like lactulose and/or rifaximin.

You need to run this past your specialist because it could be a sign your liver is struggling a little more.

Katie

H Red,

Any new symptom that you are concerned about should be discussed with your own doctor.

Best wishes.

Do you feel a sweetish unpleasant aftertaste or the smell of rotten eggs in your mouth?

Hi, I have the same thing on and off when I run or get vey hot. It is a little like the peroxide smell that you smell in a hairdresser! My doctor discussed that it can be toxin and liver related, eating a high protein diet or ketones

Ammonia, my wee smells strongly of this. Said to my friend it’s like perm lotion. 😳

You should get that checked with your GP as there are many conditions that can cause odour to change from different sources in the body.

My objective and subjective diagnosis of this was specific to my own personal clinical presentation, whereas it will be different for someone else. I am pretty sure, I was doing excessive exercise for my ability at that time, eating a very high protein diet and not enough carbohydrates. Get it checked out with your doctor.

You could be right there, I’ve not been eating a lot of carbs. I’m extremely anxious at moment, I suppose you use loads of energy that way. I have told Gastro about it. I’m awaiting results of CT scan so praying I haven’t got anything too serious. Thank you. Have you got problems with liver?

in reply to

I have seriously advanced cirrhosis but run 4 x weekly when I’m well and look after myself meticulously. See what your consultant says. As I said there are many causes for odd smells, not just the liver disease. You should let them know specifically that the smell is in your urine. Good luck with the CT results x

Thank you. Hope you have lovely evening.

Just wanted to emphasise Worrysome, that not eating lots of carbs in itself, would probably not be indicative of a cause for a drastic change in smell to body fluids such as sweat and urine. There could be a whole range of other physiological processes and disease factors that need to be taken into consideration by the GP or specialist doctor that they refer to. x

Interesting, I experienced the same post Tx. Thought it was imagined but it was exactly as you described - the smell of perm lotion!I thought related to ammonia - which of course is a build up I. the brain leading to hepatic encephalopathy.

You too x

I have a strong urine smell, I try and drink lots of water to flush it out. Sometimes it's very dark
