Hi all,

A couple of months ago I requested a full blood test as I was feeling tired quite a lot after my 1st Covid shot. They came back on the 13/04/21 with everything good apart from the liver markers being raised.

Serum Total Bilirubin Levels 11.0 umol/L

ALT 104.0 iu/L

Total Alkaline Phosphate 61.0 iu/L

Serum Albumin 49.0 g/L

I have no idea how raised these are but I know they're not the worst.

Last night I went for an ultrasound scan on my abdomen and was told that my liver looked bright which suggested fatty liver and my spleen was borderline.

I think lockdown has been a contributor as I was at home from March 20 to pretty much March this year. I have 3 small young children and by the time I got them to bed I was too tired to exercise which I would normally do at least 3 times a week. I was drinking more than usual but it was due to helping me wind down fast to get myself to sleep.

I've hire a nutritionist a couple of weeks ago and I'm on a detox for 2 weeks. I've lost about 9lbs and my blood pressure has lowered to a great 110/68. I've had hypertension in the past that was eventually control through medication.

I'm only taking half a tablet now and monitoring so I feel that I'm on the right path with eating well, exercising and no drinking.

The questions I have is what is my outlook? Will I be able to reverse this and drink in moderation (which I know I can). Do I need to stop completely? I honestly don't understand the blood markers and its vague online.

I think food was a factor as well through lockdown. I feel a little ashamed that I let myself slip but I was totally run down with 7 days a week with 3 children on my own for 5 of them. I have bloods again on Friday but with the scan last night I'm worried that they're going to be worse.

Any advise would be helpful as I'm worried sick, I just don't want to leave my children so young.

Thank you for reading.

David.

Your doctor should send you to a hepatologist for further testing. Try to ask about a fibroscan. Depending on where you are,( I’m in the US), ask for an emergency appointment- in my healthy system that could be in about 3-5 days

Hi David, we are not allowed to comment on anyones readings but I wish they were mine. Fatty liver can be reversed, healthy eating exercise and cutting your alcohol down, I would suggest cutting the alcohol altogether as it will give your liver time to try to get back to working as it should. Why don’t you continue with the dietician and just stop for a little longer. I know it is worrying but right now you are in a position to do something about it, possibly reverse it. All the best for tomorrow and let us know how you get on 🌻

Agreed with jazzjam, if what you have is fatty liver, no need to be worried sick about leaving this world due to liver failure any time soon. Don't ignore the issue, the time to make dramatic lifestyle changes is now, but your liver is likely to fully recover if you take the proper steps. Many folks on here (certainly myself) would give an arm and both legs to have a liver like yours.

There is also a Fatty Liver Foundation community on this site that may have more NAFLD-specific info for you. Best of luck.

Thank you. I'd already changed before I got my first test back. I will be keeping my diet clean from now on 100%. I've got too much to lose.

From one Dave to another, your story sounds very similar to my own. Prior to lock down, I was exercising. My diet wasnt great, but it got much worse in 2020.

As mentioned by others, only a hepatoligist or gastro can confirm for sure.

But the good news is that if you stick to diet and exercise, NAFLD can be reserved if thats what it is. This will likely be a life long thing to manage to, so just remember this isnt a sprint (or crash/fad diet). You need to build a program that can be sustained. But it sounds like you're off to great start.

Feel free to DM and ask questions.

David

Thank you for your comment! Yes definitely will sustain, no chance I would let it slip with this wake up call. I'm not too bothered about alcohol but it would be nice to have a couple of glasses when I go for a meal. It's crazy because I've always exercised and ate well but didn't help and with not having any free time I ate and drank way too much. My weight is back on it's way down and fitting back into some old clothes so I'm positive but I would like to know what actually caused it, but that might not be possible. I'll DM you anyway, thanks
