I'm not a doctor, but from what I understand, GGT is a measure of oxidative stress.

Metabolizing large amounts of alcohol is notorious for raising GGT, but the highest I ever popped my GGT was around 150 after a boozy vacation.

Toxins and some medications (like Tylenol/paracetamol) can also raise GGT, particularly with heavy exposures.

I believe the upper limit for the normal range is around 50-80 in most labs, so GGT up near a thousand would be something he definitely would want to follow up with his doc.

Ggt was the only level way over with my hubby. Took 6 months of testing to find he had alpha 1 anti trypsin deficiency.

Became cirrhosis and on explant found over ten hcc. He is till here 7 plus years post transplant

Similarly my GGT is the only abnormal function (142) and I await a resection for HCC on Wednesday (hopefully). But in answer to the original post I gather that GGT levels are affected by alcohol and other toxins. My wife’s levels rose to 160 after chemotherapy and it took 6 months for them to halve even with a healthy balanced diet.

I had a GGT of 1384 when first diagnosed with F4 Cirrhosis over 2 years ago . I stopped drinking immediately, and my GGT level dropped over time, and now is in normal range.

My consultant would know if I started drinking again ( I never will) because my GGT would rise. Your friend needs to stop drinking now.
