I take anti immune medication which can be known to damage the liver. Being stupid and ignorant I have continued drinking heavily. I have regular blood tests which indentified liver abnormality and I had an ultrasound. The consultant told me I was stage 3. He said I can drink but must reduce and moderat. He thinks the damage is caused by the medication which I've ceased. A gallstone, and obviously drinking. I was drinking pro 8 bottles of wine a week. Im waiting to be called back to discuss in details but I'm scared. Is stage three reversible. Do I need to abstain. I'm 52 X

Um no. You cant drink with stage 3 liver disease at all. No reputable doctor would have told you that was ok. Stage 3 liver disease is advanced disease right before cirrhosis. If you abstain completely you might see some regression in the scar tissue after some years time but your liver will never be back to full normal architecture. Get a new doctor if he actually told you that was ok to do.
Thanks. I guess I knew. It's was at the scan stage so I'm waiting to see the actual consultant. He prob thought saying no all together might be impossible. As it is it woke me up and I went a week, had one bottle and have gone another week - last night I only had half a bottle. Not as hard as I thought.
Just keep in mind that everytime anyone drinks alcohol, the alcohol goes to the liver and it causes inflammation. In healthy livers the damage gets fixed up by the livers natural healthy cells and life goes on no problem. When the liver is already damaged as yours Is the inflamattion gets repaired by HSC cells and they repair it as scar tissue. Because your liver is damaged any alcohol your consume is furthering the damage one little scar at a time. Even when we decide to quit drinking the damage that's there from that point will still need to be repaired and it will repair as more scar tissue. It's not at all uncommon for people to end up more advanced in their disease before they get to see it all calm down to a halt. So if you are at an F3 stage your really playing with fire to potentially end up in cirrhosis before this is all said and done. I believe in free will and that any man can do as he wishes. Just want to lay it out so people can make informed choices in those decisions. Best of luck
To be frank Bob you surely don’t need to ask whether you should abstain, do you? I’m sure you know the answer. But if you don’t Phoenix’s answer will help you decide....
It's hard to stop drinking but if you want to improve your situation and live longer, you need to abstain. I know that just considering it might make you feel depressed and anxious but alcohol is hard on the liver and when there's damage already, it's just catastrophic. I might have fatty liver and I'm taking a break (maybe I'm stopping all together) from any alcohol. Take it a day at a time, then a week at a time and so on... And seek help if needed. But don't continue drinking. It will lead to disaster sooner than you think.
