Dizziness with diuretics

Hi everyone,

I was put on diuretics about 4 weeks ago to get rid of ascites and swelling in legs. It’s worked really well - the thinnest my legs have been since I started having liver problems.

Only thing is having problems with blood pressure dropping on standing up, especially if crouched down. Go really dizzy, vision goes black and get pins and needles feelings and go really hot. Have to hold onto something or would fall over. Understand it’s a side effect of diuretics (furosemide and spinonactolone). Anyone else experienced this and any tips?

Thank you

Julie,

Yes, I was on both of those pre-transplant, the dose had to be reduced due to the impact on my kidney function. Fell over, once down the stairs fracturing two spinal vertebrae. Lessons, use a walking stick, sit upright for at least a minute before standing. I also got a fall alarm, ask your GP. If the fluid is coming off, that is great news. I ended up on drains every three weeks and having to put up with Frankenstein footwear. The joy of getting normal shoes on.

Good luck and happy Xmas,

Mark

Hi, I was told to come of my furusomide and spironolactane due to low blood pressure and symptoms like yours. I consulted my hepatologistvwhomeventually put me back on them due to ankles swelling again and I feel fine now. I just needed a break from them under supervision but don't get up too quick and if your out try to sit down if you feel odd.

Best wishes, happy Christmas, Julie xxxx

Hi JulietLeeds,

You should call your doctor and let him know this is happening. He may do something with your medications to make the side effects less.

My husband is on diuretics, but he has high blood pressure and is also being treated for that.

I've heard that it is good to take your time rising from a lying or seated position when one has the symptoms you have, which can be easier said than done.

I'd call the doctor, let him/her know you are having issues and see if there is something that can be done to help you.

Best wishes,

Mary
