Taking care of my mom who was dx with fatty liver ds. Turned into end stage cirrohosis. Very mild forgetfulness but all the sudden she hates my sister and myself. She says terribly mean things at times. She cusses which she didnt do before. She can turn this behavior on and off depending who is around. Is she just mean or sick? Please help!

God morning,

I am sorry you are having such a difficult time, it is upsetting when the behaviour of someone you love alters in this way .

What you are describing with your mother sounds very much like something called 'Hepatic Encephalopathy', the liver is not able to process all the toxins in the body and the build up can affect the brain cells. Here is the link to reading something about this. It is important as well that your mothers medical team are made aware of what you are describing in order to determine whether anything can be done to help.

Thank you for this site & God bless you all. She has been diagnosed with HE before and was hospitalized. This is different because she is ONLY mean to my sister & myself. The very same day she seems to function semi-normally, is nice to everyone but so mean to us were in tears constantly. She tells me my father hated me! If I know this is health related I will continue to take care of her but day after day hurting me if it is on purpose I just can NOT handle. Any help is appreciated always!

You always take it out on people you are closest too. Your mum is suffering and is trying (& succeeding!) to hurt you and your sister because she is hurting too and sometimes it feel like you can get rid of your pain & frustration that way. I too suffered with encephelopathy and took it out on my partner. He said I was hell to live with at that time. Medication helped but it didn't go away altogether. However 4 weeks post-transplant I can already tell my head is clearing and I'm not so nasty anymore. Hang in there and talk to the doctors. They can help x

As someone who had HE, I can tell you, I was getting it two times a week, with barely anytime to rcover, I got it so bad that I had dementia type symptoms with I had would last 2 or 3 days. I remembered nothing. It was terrifying! I’d wake up, or come too, not knowing what day it was etc. I had mood swings also, being mean, or just crying. Mine came from a shunt they put in me...I was never so glad that it got taken out when I got my second liver.

Thinking of you and your mum. Good luck!

Cheering you on!

Kimberly
