Strange question but here it goes

My liver doctor said I can only drink 1.5 litres of fluid a day. Not alcohol lol. Can you drink too much fluids on cirrhosis?

Same as hubby, he was told 1 1/2 litres a day - up to 2 litres in hot weather. Never needed diuretics and never had ascites. Also, cut out as much salt as you can from your diet.

1.5 litres does seem awfully low in a tropical climate. Need to keep an eye on your fluid output and make sure you don't get too dehydrated 'cos that brings its own issues with regards to kidneys and such like.

Hi. I suggest when you visit your liver doctor you take a notepad and pen and ask any questions at the time as any info is given to you and write it down. Have a friend with you. 2 sets of ears are better than 1. And be sure to follow all the guidelines in order to recover. Unfortunately it was all too late for my alcoholic husband who died at the age of 54 with liver failure kidney failure and pneumonia. He was in intensive care for the last 16 days of his life it's not a pretty death ... I watched it. Take care.

Sounds like they’re trying fluid restrictions instead of diuretics, I’ve got cirrhosis with ascities I was put straight on diuretics and that’s controlling it. I’m on a strict low salt diet and have to cook all my food as it’s impossible to tell how much salt is in cafe or restaurant food (it’s easy when you get used to it and I do still eat out but I stick to simple plain dishes ie no fancy sauces!) I’ve been out of hospital for 8months and never needed another ascities drain ( the doctors and nurses told me most patients are back in 4-6 weeks!) My consultant is amazed at how well I’m doing. Really reducing your salt intake seems to have made all the difference

Hi just wanted to say fluid restriction is less problematic than diuretics which eventually can affect the kidneys.It is a delicate balancing act. I had fairly high dose diuretics which eventually led to kidney failure. I was draining 12 to 14 litres a week. Everyones combination of medical aspects is different .Talk it over with your doctor it may just be temporary .Good luck.

My husband has ESLD due to methotrexate induced cirrohsis. Referrred for transplant assessment at Addenbrookes last August but too many co-morbidities to be accepted for transplant. He is on fluid restrictions of 1.5 litres a day and low salt. This is a constant juggling act because he also has a kidney stone so needs fluids to keep his kidney as well as possible. Takes 200mg spironolactone one day and 100mg the next. No ascites so far but we have to work at it!! His liver has been decompensated for over a year and his local consultant now admits he missed opportunities to refer my husband for tranplant assessment sooner than last March.

Can I ask how long after starting on methatrexate did he develope cirrhosis of the liver ?

The honest answer is we have no idea! He was on MTX back in the late 1980's/early in 1990's for psoriatic arthritis, having regular LFT's. These came back with an issue needing follow up and he had a liver biopsy in early 1992. All he was told after this was that he could no longer take MTX. Fast forward to May 2014 when he had a big gastric bleed in the middle of the night. He was in hospital for a week having blood transfusion and endoscopies for varices. The discharge papers at the end of that week said "known methotrexate induced cirrhosis of the liver". It wasn't known to us till then and I've been fighting ever since to get an answer to that question...
