Hello

My ggt was 100 lowered to 56 after a months abstinence normal range 0-40. Alt was 68 and lowered to 50 normal range 0-33. All other bloods in normal ranges. Having ultrasound tomorrow and worried what they may find. Any advice or comments appreciated.

Hi Rosie, I have an ongoing similar situation to yours. Good to see your levels have come down and I had my scan yesterday. I think it depends upon who does your scan as to what they may tell you at the time. For me it is a wait until next week to have the full report and to discuss with my GP. Also, I guess, it depends on how you are in yourself, how long you have been drinking, if you have any health issues/problems. Hope this helps for now. Good luck

Peace, laughs and love xxx

Thanks so much for your response good luck for next week with your results. I have no liver symptoms but am overweight have diabetes though diet controlled. I have drunk rather too much wine over the years 2 to 3 glasses an evening most evenings just hope I haven't done long term damage. Now on 3 month abstinence before next blood tests. Thank you for your kindness x

Eh up Rosiepo

Pretty much in same position as yourself. My ALT was up at 103 when I was enjoying a few beers on a night, every night, and feeling knackered most afternoons. Aso had a high BMI

Off the Ale for 6 weeks and ALT coming down steady to 80 at the moment. GGT only measured once at 88 and had ultrasound scan - "normal " fatty liver disease

Know sticking to max 2 units per day and have changed diet to a more healthy version. Feel much better, losing weight. GP says ALT should continue to reduce slowly and don't see the need to repeat GGT

I do hope that your ultrasound is "normal"

Take care

John

Is fatty liver disease classed as normal?

I’m new to all of this and my ultrasound shows a fatty liver and I have elevated liver enzymes. Just waiting to see my Dr to see what it all means.

Thanks

Fatty Liver isn't normal. It is fast becoming a health crisis in the Western World and is the early stage of liver damage. If not reversed fatty liver can go on to lead to the liver becoming fibrotic or worse - sadly too many doctors still say "it's just fatty liver!" and give incorrect guidance on drinking levels and such like. Hopefully your doctor will explain what it means but there is guidance on the British Liver Trust page on Non-Alcohol Related and Alcohol Related fatty liver disease.

Thank you for your response.

I don’t drink alcohol and I’m not overweight and have a reasonable diet (over indulged at Christmas I admit!).

I also have very high cholesterol and I’m actually waiting to see lipid specialist right now (2pm appointment so sat on my phone!). I think maybe they’re connected but not totally sure as it’s all new! Hopefully this dr can help with directing me to what’s next.

Thank you.

Yes spot on. I'm also new to all of this. My Dr did just that "It's fatty liver" and didn't seem very concerned at all. Read up on it and made lifestyle choices

Hi radio John

Thanks for taking the time to reply and for your reassuring story. Easy to get very worried when you realise you don't know enough about your liver and what you are doing to it !

Giving up the wine was easier than expected but it would be nice to have an occasional glass in the future will need to be guided on that one by GP.

Keep well

Take care

Hi Rosiepo,

Yes you are correct about not knowing enough but Dr Google is brilliant.

My GP didn't seem at all concerned about the fatty liver and wanted to determine what was a safe alcohol consumption level for me. I'm very lucky that the Dr I saw (it's a bloody lottery who you see unless you book a consultation months in advance for a specific GP) does live in the real world and accepts I like a pint.

Sticking to 1 a night (2 units) and monitoring ALT

take care

John
