I listen to quite a few running-related podcasts while I'm doing my strength training, Endurance Planet is my fave: enduranceplanet.com/

I listen to radio four or my own choice of down loaded music

I don’t listen to many podcasts when running but sometimes I listen to audiobooks to kill two hobbies with one stone...

AS I am profoundly deaf, there is little point in me listening to pod casts or anything through ear phones.

However earphones do have a negative impact on my enjoyment.

I am a friendly Northerner and so like to greet fellow runners with a cheery 'Good Morning!' as we pass each other. Those with ear phones rarely, if ever, acknowledge this, so 'tuned in' are they to the sounds in their ears. Which I find sad.

Funnyrunner profile image
Funnyrunner in reply to Martin_Peagam

I listen to music but I like to say hello to fellow runners... But a lot of the ones here are so serious they are huffing and puffing professionally and don't give a little snail like me a second glance! πŸ˜‚

Martin_Peagam profile image
Martin_PeagamGraduate10 in reply to Funnyrunner

If they are 'puffing professionally' they are clearly not doing it right.

When I am running, I always look out for snails, little or otherwise. I would hate to crush one under my feet!

So you may be assured that if we pass each other I shall be sure to greet you in a friendly manner.

Gran4z profile image
Gran4zGraduate10 in reply to Martin_Peagam

I look out for snails too, the thought of crunching one is horrific, esp as I'm a snail too 🐌. And I'm unlikely to pass you, I don't pass many runners, but I will smile and say hello if we pass each other πŸ™‚πŸŒ»

I understand this! I never run with headphones anymore as I like to interact with the world around me, and I would certainly return your 'Good Morning' in kind 😊

I also listen to music, but say hello or good morning to everyone I see. I like the music to keep me going, but like to take in everything around me as well.

I listen to Mark Riley and Rob Hughes’ β€œA to Z of David Bowie” at the gym. I think I’m on about J at the moment. A new podcast is supposed to come out each Tuesday but it seems to have got a bit erratic the last few weeks, maybe they’ve been on holiday too!

Oo this is a great poll. And great for ideas too :D I've branched out into podcasts on my longer runs because it helps to settle into something other than music sometimes. On my hamster run the other day I listened to the first few Serial episodes as everyone had been going on about them for ages, I wasn't blown away but I'll persevere till I'm through them.

serialpodcast.org

I also tried the All Killa No Filla comedy podcasts about serial killers (it does sound odd, but again on recommendation!) and they passed the time. I've not yet returned to them though which may be telling.

allkillanofilla.libsyn.com

Not strictly podcasts, though they have been set up to be consumed that way, I also enjoy In Our Time if I want something a bit more high browβ€”but Melvyn Bragg does mumble so they're not necessarily brilliant for running somewhere urban.

I used to listen to my "running" playlist (a whole new topic) - M. Jackson "Beat It etc, etc. But You can't beat Yes Minister. Half an hour goes very quickly.

I've no idea what a podcast is or where they are found.

I listened to music during C25K. In July, I took on a walking challenge and started listening to audiobooks. I'm now experimenting with audiobooks instead of music while running.

roseabi profile image
roseabi in reply to Denovo

The word 'podcast' actually derives from the iPod, but it has come to mean any sort of downloadable broadcast, and they are very popular at the moment. I suspect they are mostly non-fiction subjects (as suggested by my clumsy poll list :)) but there are also fictional ones such as 'Serial' mentioned by Sqkr above. Apps such as Player FM, or iTunes of course, are useful for searching for and listening to podcasts 😊

Denovo profile image
Denovo in reply to roseabi

Ah, I see.

I took up membership of Audible and get a credit for an audiobook each month. This month, I even got a 2-for-1 offer and currently have about 25 hours of listening with another credit due in a couple of weeks, so am amply supplied so far! :)

I listen to God. For which I don't need earphones.

I have tried Orthodox podcasts, Byzantine Chant, Russian church music, and the 'great and the good' explaining stuff. But I have found that His creation is much the best - in which I include the wheezing of my lungs...

Well, you did ask.

I'm currently listening to my entire iPod contents on shuffle. It's interesting to be listening to a wide range of music with the odd chapter of a book thrown in and some Christian teaching too. But I agree, an earphones free run can be great prayer time.

I've started listening to johnnie walkers sound of the seventies. His podcast lasts 4k run 5k run and my longer run. Life's good. πŸ˜πŸ‘

I listen to my own playlists, the beat of the music seems to help keep me going. I will give podcasts a try in the future when I start to do longer runs.

I listen to desert island discs, soul music BBC4, world book club BBC4. I’m always looking for new podcasts to listen to so I look forward to reading the comments. I cant imagine doing my long runs without a podcast or two.

Sarararara profile image

Until recently I’ve listened to a pounding selection of excellent tunes to keep my feet moving.

As the runs have got longer, I’ve started listening to audible books but I’ve noticed my pace has dropped. Looks like I need to alternate between the two.

roseabi profile image
roseabi in reply to Sarararara

I used to listen to podcasts with a metronome app running 180 bpm in the background. Not sure I'd recommend it as a relaxing pastime, though 😊

KarinJR profile image
KarinJRGraduate10 in reply to roseabi

How do you get the two to play simultaneously? I was thinking of trying an audiobook, but I really need to hear a beat to keep me on pace.

roseabi profile image
roseabi in reply to KarinJR

Hmmm, it used to work on my old phone, but I just tried it on this one and it doesn't! I'll investigate...

roseabi profile image
roseabi in reply to KarinJR

I found a setting on the metronome app to "allow parallel music playing", so it does now play at the same time as my podcast player.

The app is called Pro Metronome, but it's Android only...

I mainly listen to music. I prefer the continuous mix type with no breaks.

What I hate more than anything is running β€œnaked” (eg without any form of music or distraction) I have, by necessity, run without music and my cadence & breathing were all over the place!!

I have been listening to "My Dad Wrote a porno" OK sounds a bit iffy but it is essentially 3 comedians dissecting some terribly written "Erotic literature" written by one of the teams fathers. It will not be everyone's cup of tea but the three have now something like 56k followers on facebook, a sell out tour with it in America and recently sold out the Albert Hall. I find it hysterical!

I mix it up with music, podcasts & live radio. If you haven’t heard the β€˜Fortunately’ podcasts with Fi Glover & Jane Garvey, they’re an irreverent treat! Steve Punt’s β€˜Punt PI’ from Radio 4 investigations are very absorbing too πŸ‘πŸΌ

I ticked podcasts but I mix it up too. I put my gym playlist on here a while ago and do Podcasts and Radio 2, the latter is good as I live in Cyprus and it is a little piece of back home. Wrighty in the afternoon and Popmaster in the morning!

I listen to music on Spotify as it helps drown out the sound of my breathing!

I see a few people on here feel it's a shame that we're all plugged into our earphones - I only have one in so I can hear what's going on around me (I run down single track lanes and bridleways so need to know if any horses or vehicles are coming)

I listen to music and zone in and out depending on whether I need a good toon to motivate me, I run with one earphone in so I am aware of my surroundings - I do plug in both if I need a toon to keep me going thoughπŸ˜‚πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ I’ve only used the C25K podcasts, I’ve thought of trying an audio book or radio programme, but worried it’ll take too much concentration, then I might completely forget what I’m doing and fall over! 😱

I'm an Audible subscriber too. I am working my way through Terry Pratchett at the moment having completed Game of Thrones and various other bits and pieces. The 100 year old Man who Climbed out of the Window and Disappeared was really good. I find a book much better than music on long runs for passing time. Only problem is I sometimes drift off and my speed goes haywire. Either I'm just jogging or I have sped up and suddenly realise there's a reason for my laboured breathing on a downhill bit. It shows just how lost you can get in a good book.

Also, I find books less laxative than music, strangely. No idea what the science behind that is but I am grateful for any run when I don't have to disappear into the woods/behind a hedge/into a pub...

roseabi profile image
roseabi in reply to Langley-Loper

I have the opposite problem - I call it 'the library effect' πŸ˜‚

Langley-Loper profile image
Langley-LoperGraduate10 in reply to roseabi

This has been really interesting reading- I know about podcasts but never actually bothered about them before. I have an android phone- could I ask which podcast app is best recommended for me to download to listen to podcasts while running? Just did a quick google and I’m confused already! Should I pay for Podcast (good reviews) or is there a decent free one ? Thanks for any help!! Don’t need anything too fancy, anything too involved goes over my head .....

I listen to music that is a suitable tempo. Mostly dance music. Sometimes I throw in a bit of a hand jive whilst I’m running, not sure what the locals make of that, but the music means I can’t hear them!

KarinJR profile image

As a new runner (2 months in), I find I really need music to make my feet move. I actually quite like the NHS 5K+ Stamina podcast (and have listened to it many times) - I must be one of the few who actually likes the music! I have also made music playlists (usually rock) from songs with 160-165 bpm conveniently categorized on jog.fm.

For Podcasts (which I haven't tried for running) - there are loads of interesting and free programs. BBC World Service The Documentary; and the ubiquitous Ted Talks - something for everyone!
