Thanks for getting in touch . I’m sure this could be helpful for some ladies. I’ve had a mastectomy but don’t have that problem . I was wondering which exercises to do however as the scar is quite tight ! Regards and thanks Denise

One of the most important things to do is to keep moving! Lots of women get in trouble with their arm because they start to fear movement and use of their arm. Keep incorporating it into daily activities! Also, posture is very important after this surgery to prevent scar and muscular tightness. Your body will want to be in a slouched posture which puts bones like ur shoulder blades in a suboptimal position and will then limit your overhead mobility of your shoulder and cause lots of tightness. Check out this website it has lots of great info on types of exercise and all things lymphedema/breast cancer surgeries :) over head stretching exercises and stabilization exercises of the scapula are very important in maintaining your range of motion lymphedemablog.com.

However, you should definitely visit a lymphedema physical therapist so that they assess you for specific needs :)

Specific ones I usually use for scar tightness are shoulder retractions, wall slides, pec stretch at a corner wall (if tight bc it usually is and this position also helps with the scar)and walking your hands up a broom leaning forward and holding at the top for a stretch. They are hard to describe through writing 😆 but I can send some pictures if you need more details

Hi Suzzze, thanks for getting in touch. I’ve had chemo, left axillary clearance followed by radiotherapy, doctors couldn’t find primary cancer in breast, treated for breast, ovary and lung. My problem is left breast lymphodema, can’t seem to reduce it. I wear tape and wear compression bras permanently, not sure if swimming makes it worse

They are little bags of foam that u put in your compression bra and it does a little micro massage that helps move persistent lymphedema in swell spots. Check out bandagesplus.com. They have a bunch of different shapes to fit different types and areas

Also, swimming should be fine as long as the temperature of the water is not too hot or too cold
