Ghi all, I haven't posted for a little while as I've been in hospital for a couple of months. I'm expecting to stay for many more months on a neuro rehab ward. The main thing I'm struggling with is the effects of having a stroke as a complication of one of my surgeries. has Anyone else had this experience?
A few weeks ago I was leading walks and living independently and now I'm relearning how to walk and having all of my personal care supported by someone else 😒
garden elf it is scary cause it like saying bye to the life you have. All I can tell you that I had a stroke after my aneurysm burst in1999 my kids were both at the beginning of college . Instead of mama helping them now they had to help me I had to learn to walk and talk again I was 42 year old this can’t be I had to quit my job . I had so much physical theory occupation therapy and speech therapy . My speech was so bad one coworker said I can’t understand you I’m sorry I’m not going to come see you anymore I thought that coworker was a friend find out fast who stick by you. My husband and kids practice with me simple thing like saying over abc lots of flash cards. In physical therapy I recall one lady at the end said I can tell you now we took bets you wouldn’t walk right I said that a mean thing to do she said well you prove us wrong after two years I was walking good you couldn’t tell by looking at me I had a stroke . My speech got better. I got better in my late 50s and 60 I travel I went to Paris to London to Prague to Berlin before that I travel in the states I’m 67 now with your grandkids two great grandkids and I get to spoil them . I’m saying life will get better but you have to put in the work there will be times you want to give up but have to keep going. Prayers to you in this journey
It will get better. I promise you. This was me 26 years ago, when I was 22. I’d had a ruptured basilar aneurysm successfully coiled the previous year (no deficits at all) but they found another aneurysm not suitable for coiling back in ‘97. There was a 10% chance of me having a slight weakness after the clipping op but I woke up totally paralysed down my left hand side. I had to relearn to walk and it took about 6 months before I got anything back in my left hand. But it did come back. I had to take a year off my university course to recover but I did go back a year later. The brain is a clever thing. It finds different pathways to do tasks if parts of the brain have been damaged. Don’t give up hope. Things will improve over time.
Such a lot to deal with at such a young age. Well done you for finding your way through recovery. Your message makes me feel hopeful that my recovery is possible too x
