Hi, I had my first child about 2yrs ago and it was a successful pregnancy. I got pregnant about a yr ago and i was exactly 16weeks along before i had the abortion. Now i'm trying to conceive with my fiance amd we're having problems. Is it because of the abortion i had a yr ago? Or is it because we're not doing it right?

Hi There,

Try not to worry. Abortion is a very safe procedure covered by antibiotics, and if you had no complications post-treatment your body is usually fertile again after 3-4 weeks. That's why contraception is always talked about afterwards. Sometimes with a change of partner it may take a different period of time to concieve. Lots of couples can take over a year to become pregnant. Do go and talk to your GP/family planning nurse if you are really worried, but most GP's won't investigate fertility until it's been 2 years of trying.

Try to relax and enjoy being a couple, I'm sure you're doing it right!

Best Wishes

Katherine

I just have one question...why have the abortion if you're only going to have another child again in a years time? Why not just keep that baby? Good luck with conceiving again but honestly I think you're selfish for aborting that baby but then trying again. I apologise id that upsets you but I just really don't see the point.

Hello- I really hope you are doing okay and try not to worry too much, conceiving can take a long time for lots of different couples. I don't think you are being selfish for wanting a baby after having an abortion, you made a decision that was right for you and your family then, and now you are making a different decision a year on, that doesn't make you selfish that makes you human. I have been in exactly the same position as you so completely understand your worries and concerns as I also had an abortion and then years later when the time was right for me and my husband we made the decision to start trying for a baby and had problems conceiving. We also wondered if the abortion could affect my fertility but my GP reassured me that it had absolutely nothing to do with it. I know it's the worst thing to hear when all you can think about is getting pregnant but if you can try and relax, or find a way to de-stress that can help. Also don't for one minute think that you are selfish, because your decision to have an abortion is a deeply personal one and would have been made for reasons that were right for you and your family. Circumstances change and what is right at one moment in time can be wrong at a different time. X
