Does anyone knows a particular clinic or Hospital near London ( Surrey for exemple) that perfom REMS tests?

Osteoscan UK Ltd run REMS clinics around the country, but have a waiting list. You'll find all their clinics listed here: osteoscanuk.com/copy-of-hea.... The only other company I'm aware of that does them in England is Profortis, which is in Amersham.

Thanks Met00. Do you know if TBS test is similar to REMS? Or is it another kind?

TBS is Trabecular Bone Score, which is an extra score available on a limited number of DEXA scanners. It gives a better idea of bone strength than t-scores alone. REMS scans use ultrasound, as opposed to x-ray with DEXA. REMS is more fully automated so is less open to error, but will give similar results to DEXA when both are done properly. REMS also includes a bone strength score ("fragility score").

In addition to Osteoscan, there is also a clinic in Knightsbridge that offers REMS scans and another in Amersham.

Hi Vera

Could you let us know if the REMS was helpful when you've had one?

Hi, I had a REMS scan last March, with Dr Nick Birch, who runs the OsteoScan UK. I am due to have my 2nd scan next month. It is very efficient and you get the results afterwards in your consultation. The big plus about REMS is it calculates your bone strength, giving a fragility score, which a DEXA scan does not provide, unless you’re scanned by a DEXA machine which has had the software added on to show your trabecular bone score. Bone strength and quality is a better predictor of whether you are at risk of fracture, rather than just your bone density.

I had REMS done by Osteoscan 3 weeks ago. It was definitely worth the long drive and overnight stop. I've already booked a more local one at one of their 2026 clinics. Felt so much more optimistic afterwards. Good luck.

Hi Poppy. I am interested to hear you felt more optomistic after your Osteoscan. I hope you do not mind if I enquire why? I am thinking of one as I have been shocked and surprised (like you I think!) at my Dexa scan so wonder if it would provide a better idea of what's going on..

Hi TandemTime. My hip score was very similar to Dexa but with my height and BMI plus age, apparently it was what was to be expected, the difference being that the bone strength is good. My spine scores were a lot better than Dexa and where Dexa had given a high fragility, that was counting 2 fractures I'd had in the past. One was a vertebra and one humerus, both after nasty falls so more trauma than fragility. So when I left I felt that I didn't have to sell my sea kayak or be in total fear of bones breaking. My slight challenge is that I have osteoporosis developing in hips but I really want diet and exercise to work as opposed to taking alendronic acid - I'll certainly give it my best shot. The recommended supplement was Vit D3/K2 which I have in a spray. On Osteoscan website there are some really informative podcasts which give a lot of information about REMS. Yes, when I had my Dexa I was very shocked having been fit and active. All the best with your future journey.

Sorry I meant to say this is very helpful and I will take stock of what you have said by getting this additional Rems test and looking at the other advice which agrees with my current thinking on Vitamin K and D. Not that I have tried a spray...yet! I want to get back on our bike !! Happy Sea Kayaking...😀

Hi Verauk, my personal experience is this: February 2024 .-2.7 with an heel scan at the pharmacy; March 2024 DEXA -4 for the spine -2.2 for the hip; TBS 1.345; September 2024 REMS-2.6 spine -2.4 hip. It seems to me that TBS aligns better with ultrasound while DEXA is very different. No fracture, no pain. After specialist consultation he decided against drugs so I am in the diet and exercise path till next june. 🤗

I am having a Rems scan in London at the Matt Roberts/Mayfair Health clinic in London next week. I think they do it once a month there. As I have mild scoliosis , I have read that my DEXA may not be accurate (my DEXA 18 months ago was -2.7 lumbar spine but only -1.7 hip).

My physio suggested a Rems scan as I have had one Zoledronic acid infusion (last May) (as I also have RA and my rheumatologist was keen for me to have some bone sparing treatment), and she thinks I may be able avoid having another one this year if my Rems is better. I've never had a fracture and do several gym/weights classes a week.

KeepOnRising Please what is the name of this clinic in London? I want to check if I can make an appointment for October when I will be in London. Thanks

The clinic is Mayfair Health in South Kensington (230 Brompton Road). I managed to get an appointment within 6 weeks - I think they do the scans once a month there. I'll let you know how I get on after the appointment next Thursday.

I also had a BioDensity machine introductory session there, but decided it was too expensive with too little evidence of benefit to enrol on their programme.

The PT there would be good I am sure but again, so expensive and is not in a convenient part of London for me. I'd love to find a class/exercise programme in south east London aimed at people with osteoporosis. I did do a 6 week pilates course that was good but the teacher has since left the area.

Hello Verauk - just to report that my REMs scan at Mayfair Health was very interesting - the radiologist Paul was very experienced and informative.

My bone fragility (which is measured by REMs but not DEXA) score was in the healthy range so my overall 5 year fracture risk taking into account my REMs and other factors was less than 0.4%. As I have always done a lot of impact exercise and have not had a fracture to date, this makes sense to me. Also both my hip and spine were within osteopenia range (-2) which was encouraging in comparison to my DEXA of 18 months ago which had my hip at -1.7 but my spine at -2.7.
