The answer has to be, how many have you been told to take ?

Prednisolone are usually a daily dose, so that should be shown on the box or bottle you got them in. As for the nebuliser, you should have been told how often to use it. There isn't a set answer, and we keep saying 'we are all different' because we're at different stages, with different meds and different doctors.

If you're unsure then call your GP's number, they'll have an out of hours answering service and they are probably the best bet, although they will not normally have access to your notes to be able to give a proper answer.

Or, call NHS Direct for their advice. Again, they can't be specific as they don't have access to your notes either.

If you have a major problem then you may need to get an ambulance out.

i am on a course of prednisolone at the moment following a severe chest infection (i have copd). i had to take 8 for 5 days, then 6 for 5 days, then 5 and so on until i am down to none. is this a lot? i have swollen feet now, and tingly hands, and cant stop eating. Side effects i presume. Ive not had side effects before, but not had to take so many.

Oooh, just spotted your post in an old topic - if you try and make a new post for yourself, you'll find people will answer, if you add to an old one, like this, it may never be seen...

8 a day is a pretty normal dose, 40mg total. Reducing them gradually just weans you off them, rather than stop suddenly. I'm at the stage where I'd be taking 8 a day for a week and that's it, until the next batch.

As for side effects, it may be worth having a chat with someone about those. Very difficult to tell you why in messages like this. Either call NHS Direct, or your own GP, of the BLF helpline in the morning, after 10, on 03000 030 555

You've taken another 12 Pred during the night? I really don't think they will help. In fact one of their side effect is increased anxiety etc which may affect your breathing etc. if you are that ill get yourself to either your GP or A&E.

The extra nebulisers won't hurt but i would have thought your salbutamol inhaler would have been enough. The prednisolene aren't like painkillers and so don't keep working the more you take. They are steroids and take down inflamation in the lungs, so the 8 you were prescribed should only be taken once a day. If your breathing is really worse than normal you should ring 999 to take you to hospital!

Hi

You need to have your condition and medication reviewed. You should not take the steroids more regularly than prescribed. Also if you start to take your inhalers more regularly than normal that also is a sign that you need to get things checked out. Taking nebulised medication more often may make you feel better for a little while but doesn't solve the problem, and can make things seem better than they are.

So a trip to A&E to get yourself checked out - that's what they are there for.

Going outside what is on the script is a minefield that I would not walk through without a doc giving me it in writing even an e-mail no chance of screw ups that way.

as it's predensilone, are usually one daily dose of six to eight taken altogether. in 24 hours.. but if you have any doubts then your gp, or nhs direct will advise you.... i agree go for review. in my experience of the doctors and hospital, it is excellent when you have breathing problems and nobody minds... hope you feel bit better soon

If you feel that bad I'd ring your doctor. Hope you're better soon.

get back on as soon as you are well enough, even if just to let people here know you are ok, have been checked out by docs, and now understand NEVER take prednisone except exactly as prescribed. there are like a hundred side effects possible at proper dose.

make sure you get a blue card from your chemist to carry at all times , filled in. keep it for at least a year after treatment with steroids is finished and show it to everybody like dentists, doctors, chemist when you buy anything at all. they are serious bits of kit , not to be messed with.
