Hi, I am Dot and I have COPD. I have heard coffee is bad for COPD, then I've heard it isn't and water is good for it....Is this true? If anyone knows the answer please let me know.

Thank you

It depends on you, I drink a fair amount of coffee with no problems. Drinking lots of water helps thin mucus and has other benefits.

Interesting question! For more years than I can remember I have been a coffee drinker ... to the exclusion of almost any other liquid! Last Thursday I stopped ... moved to tea and flavoured (sugar-free) water.

I was curious about the effects after such a long time (and wanted a better sleep) - whilst I can't answer your question what I can say is, so far, the abstinence of coffee has had zero impact! Mucus, breathing, sleeping, weight, mood - nothing has changed (all confirmed by me wife) no headaches, no shakes, no other side-effects from losing the coffee!

I do think, as Badbessie says, it's a very individual thing but from my experience; there's no issue with either drinking or not drinking coffee - if I do suddenly develop some symptoms I'll post back.

Best wishes

Hi, Dot. I stopped drinking coffee because of migraines and swapped to tea. I've now swapped to decaf tea and herbal teas, and don't miss the caffeine. Don't know if it's made a difference to my COPD, but I do know I can have a great night out on a glass of coca cola now!

Water is good for everything Dot and we should try and drink more. I am trying to sort out my reflux and coffee is bad for that. Try and use decaf but do it gradually so as not to get a headache. Xx

Hi

Caffeine is a diuretic

Stick decaffeinated and you will be ok

I was an engineer for many years and drank lots of black coffee. Now as my copd worsens I find coffee makes me more breathless. As others have said I think it's down to the individual and everything in moderation

A little caffeine is good, too much is bad. I only have tea & one fresh coffee (never instant) before 12pm, the rest of the day is decaf tea. If I make a mistake IE a cup of normal tea at 1 or 2pm I cannot sleep until after 3am. I absolutely know it makes a difference.

I believe caffeine can interfere with medication too.

Dot, everything in moderation, coffee, tea, wine, beer etc. I drink a fair amount of water as it is beneficial for the body in general.
