Had My Photo Taken...

I had my photo taken the other day in the chemists...the health people want to exchange our cards to a proper fancy card with photo ID which can then be used for everything...collecting a pension and free travel and all that sort of thing.

Mine looks like a wanted in all States photo...especially with oxygen nodules jammed in each nostril...

And you have to have security questions in case you're challenged by an irate 'bus driver...it says on the form to be sure to write the answers to your questions down and keep them with you in case you forget...there's a choice...the name of your first pet...that sort of thing.

If you haven't had your photos done or returned the form within two weeks you'll be summoned to 'one of our offices' where you'll be obliged to answer all the questions asked by 'an official'...as it's about a month since I received the form I ought to have sent it away long since but forgot all about it.

It does smack of George Orwell's 1984...all this malarkey about being summoned to offices and that sort of thing...

I don't care actually...I don't have a drivers licence or a passport so have no real means of proving I am who I say I am...not that it matters here, 'cos the girls in the post office know everyone anyway and there aren't any 'buses to travel on unless you want to go to Dublin and the regular 'bus driver for the route used to be our milkman...

Quite how some people manage to dodge under the radar I'll never know...there was a case came to court recently of a man in Dublin who was claiming fifteen different amounts of social security money...going from post office to post office across the city...

How in heavens name did he manage to keep track of who he was supposed to be...takes me long enough to recall my own name sometimes...never mind have differing aliases. And it must have cost him loads of money travelling all over Dublin...suppose he could afford it though...
