just new to the site,but have a question.and hopefully I might get some answers on here.

Coming up soon is my 3rd ct scan,the first scan revealed one 8mm nodule,second scan revealed another 8mm nodule,they have also discovered cavities in my lungs as well ,not many only about 6 I think,now the question is what will happen next if another nodule appears ?

sorry stilltrukin,but only redirected me to another web page.of which ive went thru many,my question is what happens if they find another nodule on my 3rd scan,or more cavities,nobody has explained what happens then.

I've scanned a number of sites about pulmonary nodules without coming across any suggestion that treatment will vary according to the number of nodules detected.

As a matter of interest one site referred to a group of 780 people, each with at least one nodule, who between them had 1600 nodules. Obviously the fewer the better, but 2 seems about average so 3 must be fairly common . . .

sorry stilltrukin, i still think your misunderstanding the question,its not about the number of nodules,its about the frequency,if every time that i go for a ct scan and there are more nodules,when do they start to really investigate the cause,or do they just wait until scan number 4, 13 months away

Yes, I did misunderstand.

I've read that if nodules are malignant they will double in size in 4-15 months. If your first nodule was the same size on the second scan then it's likely benign.

If the second nodule grew from undetectably small to 8mm across in a year or less then that's pretty alarming - time for a biopsy I would have thought.

However, this site - omicsonline.org/clinical-si... - indicates that a scan may miss some nodules. So maybe they're waiting to see if the second nodule shows rapid growth on the third scan because it could have simply not showed up on the first scan . . .

Yes,you're right,still trucking! It's the growth of them,in a period of time,that they look at.Mine were 9mms,but after 3 scans,3 months apart, the last one 6 months,they decided I didn't need another for 2 years.If they had grown Brian,they then would do a pet scan,& take it from there.

The increase in size would indicate possible cancers,that not what I am asking.

Scan 1 one nodule is found

scan 2 another nodule is found

scan 3 ???

the question is this,if any more nodules are discovered in scan 3. what happens next ?

Do they say nothing has increased in size,so next scan in 12 months time

or do the doctors do further investigations.

As my first scan was a high resolution scan,it is very doubtful that anything was missed

ive posted on this web site for the first time yesterday.

To clarify my concerns,i feel that i should give some background to my situation,so perhaps more than likely some people,on here have been in a similar situation to myself.

I went for my first CT Scan in feb of this year,2 weeks later i got my results,1 8mm nodule discovered,my Doc assured me that this was common,for a smoker my age,so all was well.

So onto my 2nd scan, got my results,and this is where all the confusion starts,i had a phone appointment with my doctor,i was told no significant change,so all is well,feeling pretty good,but the more i thought about it, the more i was not sure,so i phoned and managed to speak to my doc.i asked what the insignificant change was.He then told me that another 8mm nodule was dicovered.IThe explanation that i recieved was the first ct scan missed the second nodule,as they didnt go high enough on my first scan,iwas then reffered to a breathing specialist.In the meantime i wasnt feeling very well,so i had to go see a doctor,a very nice young lady was the doctor,i asked about my scan, the first scan was a high resolution scan,and it did cover all of my lungs,and the second nodule was most definetley a new nodule.So off i go to see my specialist,he brought my scan up on the pc,and then told me about the nodules,also i have a few lung cavities that i wasnt aware of ,or told about.So no one has told me what happens if any more nodules appear.I dont see my specialist again until dec.

Hi I was given scan and test for lung cancer they found I didnt have cancer but nobules. I was told I have a lot off these and where harmless, not to worry, that was 3 yrs ago and have no problems with them . Hope This helps. Ps I have COPD.
