Good morning, lovely weather outside, heat treatment for my scoliosis

Docs appointment was cancelled today so I have appointment for tomorrow. With only one lung working and my emphysema I am feeling awful at the moment. I have loads of mucus in my throat that I'm finding difficult to move. Any ideas how to get rid of the mucus.

Hi redgan, You could try a steam inhalation. Fill a bowl or steam inhaler if you have one with boiling water. Place it on a flat even surface. Sit down and put a large towel over your head and shoulders (tent style). Bend over and take slow deep breaths. Have plenty of tissues handy or something that you can cough the mucous into. This should help a lot. A shower can also help. This should help tide you over until you see your doctor. You could ask him about mucodyne tablets which help thin out the mucous, break it up and therefore making it easier to cough up. I was given this and it has helped enormously. If you are thinking about buying a steam inhaler try going onto Amazon where I got one for under £4. Its so easy to use. Hope you feel much better soon and do try the steam inhalation as it really does help. Take care. Hope you get on at the doctors ok. xx

Thanks huggs, I will give it a go. I am fed up with this build up of mucus. When I was diagnosed with the Emphysema and Bronchiectasis my specialist gave me no help. It is only through BLF and this forum that I am finding information out. I will ask my doctor tomorrow for those tablets. X

Yes, do. They are an excellent help. Take a few weeks to work but it may be the single best thing you can do. Good luck tomorrow.

You are very welcome redgan. I hope you can get some relief from the inhalations. I forgot to say that you can do this as many times as you like. You should have been given advice to attend a pulmonary rehabilitation course as well. I saw my physio yesterday for the first time and he gave me loads of advice on breathing and put my name down for when the next course starts. They sound very helpful. It is a small group of people with lung disorders, and a physio, a respiratory nurse and sometimes a doctor. An occupational therapist and welfare rights person also attends. Obviously apart from the physio and nurse the others will not be there every week. Where I live the course lasts 8 weeks (one day a week) and transport is provided if necessary. There is also gentle exercise, but each person is individually assessed and you will never be asked to do more than you are able. Ask your doctor about this when you see him tomorrow, failing that phone up your local physiotherapy department. Hope this information helps as it seems you have been given no advice or help at all. I have only recently been diagnosed with copd although I think I have had it longer. I also have asthma and am currently being investigated for bronchiectasis. Take care and insist on getting more help. xx

My husband has a nebuliser at home and he uses saline solution in it which really helps get rid of the mucous. Lots of hot water and honey sometimes help. I agree with hugs insist on getting more help. A call to the helpline might be of use (click on the red balloon in the corner). Lots of luck TAD xx

Oh dear, that doesn't sound good.Sorry don't have much advice to give you,I see you have some great ones suggested to you.My first thought was you need physio, can you get a referral for it? I think you'd find it very beneficial. xx
