thank you JabbatheHut. I have been quite poorly with high temp of late and was watching The Wright Stuff today where they were discussing this subject. I tried to get through a few times to take part in the 'phone in but it was constantly engaged.

I also saw the ITN news and there was a politician and someone from a pro smoking group. I was hoping to see a spokesperson from the BLF - maybe tomorrow after the debate at the House of Lords.

I really hope this goes through although I appreciate it would be difficult to enforce. Our children are too precious to be forced to take in all those toxins.

I hope it is brought in . But i believe educating parents on how second hand smoke can damage their children needs to be addressed as well especially parents who are hard to reach and engage with . And make it more of education in schools due to how will this be enforced? And following on from discussions would it extend to anywhere children are ....which i think it should be but again how would this be enforced? I have never smoked but my parents did and i think thats played big part in my lung damage . In my opinion the only answer is education and ban from all public areas ...outdoors parks anywhere children are but i think it will take a while to become normal . We have come a long way from when i was little in late 60's so we have to keep chipping away for future generations

I have to agree with this proposal.

It is not only in cars that smoking causes a problem though.

I gave up smoking cigarettes over a year ago, I live in a stair with a communal stairway leading up to two other landings, we are on the top landing.

When I come home after work and I open the front security door the smell of tobacco in the stair turns my stomach and literally makes me feel sick.

I do not object to people smoking in their own home that is up to them, but why smoke in the stair where kids and non smoking adults have to breath in their second hand smoke and stench.

I do feel a bit hypocritical for thinking this way BUT, after 16 months of not smoking and all the effort I had to put in to get there, it really hacks me off about how inconsiderate I was as a smoker even though I always went outside open air to smoke) and never smoked in houses, cars or confined places.

In spite of other neighbours and ourselves talking to the offenders about smoking in the stair, they still do it and obviously have no intention not to.

So if we are talking about the health of all, take it all the way and include anywhere where people are at risk of breathing in this poison.

Tom.

I would have thought the law regarding no smoking in public areas would already cover this stairway. Difficult situation for you. Can you contact council, landlords or whoever looks after the general areas as a group?

Hope this gets sorted out for you.

I agree with cofdrop if the stairway is a communal area it is classified as a public area where smoking is not allowed... the landlord (whether council or private) has a duty of care to ensure that the no smoking policy is upheld and at the very least notices should be fitted at the entrance / exit at the very least and he can be fined if he is not seen to be taking reasonable action to ensure that laws are enforced. It is bad enough when ashtrays are placed immediately outside the entrance door where you have to go through a wall of smokers before you enter a building? Smokers should be well away from entrance doors.... There-Rant Over???

OOPS ! - had'nt quite finished !............ ....BUT, how on earth is this to be POLICED ? - can anyone imagine a Police car driving at high speed, say on the M25, chasing a car suspected of having a child on aboard whilst a fellow passenger or driver is smoking ? ....they have enough to do chasing, and trying to apprehend Drunk drivers, Mobile Phone users, Drivers well over the Speed limit , Criminals fleeing from a crime scene etc etc, I well remember a pal of mine, some time ago, being "Chased" for a few miles by a Police car, suspected of using a mobile phone whilst driving - in fact my pal was only SCRATCHING HIS EAR !!! - and when the Police tried to trace the "Offending " Mobile phone - THERE WAS'NT ONE !! - WHY ? = BECAUSE MY PAL DOES'NT EVEN OWN ONE !! - oh dear , wer'nt there some RED FACES !!! by the police ...so time consuming mistakes could happen here as well - just a thought folks .. ...
