Constipation, I know not the usual subject on here.

Advice please and what to use that is gentle to avoid constipation, I think I am probably getting it as my diet is not too good at the moment, any help would be appreciated.

More fibre polly! Fruit and veg is good. Prunes also good. Don't know any more than that - sorry. I am sure someone will come in with a link to a site!

fruit juice works for some people and is easy to digest. Lactulose is supposed to be a mild laxative but I would stick to fruit juice it's nicer to take and easy to purchase.

Hi Polly, flibberti is right, Fybogel does seem to do the job in a very natural way so that could be the answer. You could always ask at your local Pharmacy as the Pharmacist could easily advise you. A diet that is higher in fibre, with plenty of fluids will also help. Good luck to you. Carole xx

High fibre. Lentils are good. Prunes are very good and natural. I read that the senna type tablets work but you can lose vitamins and such. Drinking plenty of Wet Water is good for your stomach balance. Try to keep off to much caffeine I use green tea and ginger tea 2 or 3 times a day. But do like a cup of coffee still. Peanuts are a high fibre too.

Yes peanuts defo do the job .. Just bit hard on teeth never new i would have to blend them but surposes thats what happens ... Defo cant stand peanut butter

Hi Polly lots of fluids but thats doesnt include tea or coffee,plain water or lightly flavoured water during the course of the day.Then drink aglass of warm water and sit on the loo according to my doc this then tickles the bowel into action !! I have to say this has helped me.Ido have a reasonable diet and love fruit, oranges,satsumas are good.Goodluck ido hope you move soon so to speak haha.Janexx

Hi Polly, Flibberti and Carole are right, Fybrogel is very good - especially if you stir it fast and knock it back before it goes thick! Lemon or orange flavours. I would try not to take it every day so your system doesn't become reliant on it.

To keep it 'soft' you must drink plenty of fluids daily. Be gentle to your system though, not too much of the fizzy, sugary & caffeinated stuff.

If you can tolerate an orange per day that will help or if a big one is too much a few clementines throughout the day as tasty little snacks.

Personally, I have a low carb, low sugar diet which suits me very well. Every day I sprinkle on my bowl of yoghurt or muesli 2 tablespoons of oat bran so that's loads of fibre for me.

Re veg there are lots that freeze well so you don't buy then waste - ie sprouts, peas, spinach, broad beans - if you have a freezer or ice box of course.

Rather than large platefuls at a mealtimes I have 4 or 5 small meals a day but I'm sure you've thought of that.

You do need to be careful with over the counter stuff. Some are laxatives and some are 'softeners' like lactulose.

As for belonging on lungs blog, don't worry, we all need to stay as well as possible and part of that is having a fully working system in every way.

Nuts! Lol! My diet is poor at the moment too and am always trying to find ways to put on weight and get some goodness into me, one of the things I started eating was nuts and dried fruit (I buy lots of different types and mix them together), not only are they nutritionally great and are something I do enjoy, the added bonus turned out to be no more constipation! Sadie xx

Activia yoghurt with figs is always useful to me - or an occasional spoonful of syrup of figs! Live yoghurt is really good for me and usually helps and as everyone else has said fruit! Good Luck TAd xx

I have bought some fybrogel and my daughter suggested hot water with juice of half a lemon and some ginger first this in the morning, wont use them all at once otherwise I will be back on asking how I stop going.

Another remedy I have used recently is Movocol, available over the counter in the chemist. It's a powder you mix with water and has a gentle action.

I agree with Lynne. I take Movocol - I get it on prescription. Is NOT a laxative just soften things! I was given it for severe constipation following op in the summer. I found it excellent and also helps with long standing IBS. Spoke to GP and no issues to take daily for ever if it helps.

My husband had trouble with constipation , he had tried all sorts, and then he got talking to his brother in Australia and he said eat a KIWI FRUIT with the skin on, so he started that, and ever since then, he has been fine, he eats one before going to bed, and they are very good for you lots of vitamins, he has no more problem.
