Hi Hypercat,
This link takes you to a selection of articles in firefox help that cover what you want to know. Favourites in IE are the same as Bookmarks in firefox.
In 'View' menu, make sure Bookmarks toolbar is checked to show it.

Can recommend 'AdBlock Plus' add-on to firefox. It stops loads of annoying pop-ups and adverts from taking up screen space. To find that, click 'tools' then 'add-ons', then follow the links on the page that opens.
