BP Monitors

I've had a pretty basic Omron for 6 years so I thought even though I get it checked every year, it was t ime for a new one. The old one just does the BP, has a little symbol for ectopics and a memory that saves 20 readings. As Boots' website wasn't working properly I bought an Omron with the same model number from Argos- then had to send it back. It had no memory except the one reading you'd just done. T hen went on BHF website and ordered a Kinetic which did the same but with a 90 reading memory. Set it up yesterday alongside my old one. The old one, recently checked by my GP showed 126/74. 10 minutes later the KInetic showed 198/ 89. No matter how often I tried both, the difference was the same. The only thing I could think of was that the KInetic had a far bigger cuff- too big for me or it was the way it worked. it increased pressure extremely slowly then when it got to the top, instantly deflated and showed the reading whereas the Omron went up slowly and back down slowly. I know for sure the Omron readings are correct. The Kinetic is being returned. The girl in the BHF shop when I rang about it was utterly useless and insisted she couldn't tell me another brand that would do what I needed. I don't want a fancy expensive one that connects to my phone et c, ; just a simple BP machine that records at least 20 memories. Any ideas? I do like Omron but have no idea which model has a decent memory. The one I bought said it had but it didn't. They all seem to come now with massive cuffs that are too big for me and my old cuff doesn't fit the new models.

UPDATE

I contacted Omron. The M2+ does not have a medium cuff. They say the M2 does and has a memory but that's incorrect. On the link they sent me it said that model was no longer made and the new M2 which is the one i sent back, doesn't have a memory at all. So as far as Omron goes now, for a basic BP machine you get the enormous cuff with the M2+ or nothing.. Thank you very much Purpled. Looks like i'll have to try the A&D just to get a cuff that fits me.

Sorry, I'm not much help. We use an Omron wrist monitor which is very accurate, but has no memories, so I just make a note of ours in a special notebook. It just shows BP and HR. Hope you can find what you're looking for

Would the Kinetic with a smaller cuff work do you think?

The Aktiia bracelet system works very well for me - very expensive at £200 but does tracke 24 hrs (ecluding when busy exercising) and has enabled me to track 2 month of improvement on Ramirpril - ave PB last night 125/78 averaged at 4 2 hour intervals. Android app a but rough and reayd but works.

hi JonB123 I have the Aktiia wrist bracelet thing too but haven’t used it yet I had been a bit put off with folk saying wrist monitors are not accurate and my bp is so variable atm I need accuracy. Did you have to check the readings on the aktiia initially with your upper arm monitor to check they were similar. We’re they pretty close. I’m reassured you’ve been using it and finding it good as I need some 24 hr readings thanks

Yes - checked against an Omron arm cuff which i have tsken to GP and verified it matched NHS monitors. Also checked heart rate against sports watch which i also verified. All rock solid.

Hi. I'm new to the site. I would say that if a bp cuff is too big it can affect accuracy of readings. It would be useful to b able to get a smaller cuff as an alternative. I have an older model Omron which for me does what it needs to do and I would say readings are pretty accurate.

Think I'll have to stick to my old Omron as long as it still works. Newer isn't always better.

I have a Qardio which seems to work well, had it calibrated to check it with GPs and just about reads the same.

But does attach to phone.

Hope this helps.

Can you tell me who calibrates BP monitors. Is it a pharmacy?

Qualipop profile image

My pharmacy just takes a reading with theirs then waits and uses mine to compare readings. It takes around half an hour because they make you sit and relax first.

I have had three omron monitors that much are all good. I log the readings on the omron app.- I do have to pay an annual subscription but all the readings are in one place so it does not matter about the memory and logs the readings over time with graphs etc

My wife and I are fans of the Omron Evolv. It stores 100 readings but you do need to use the Omron App. It comes with a 5 year warranty. Omron will recalibrate the device but this is rarely needed in our experience.

We purchased a new Evolv a couple of months ago for £78 from a well known online website. The readings from the new and old machines were identical. There is no subscription needed to use the Omron App in its basic form.

I rarely use my phone and really have no need for it. I just copy down my results and email them to my GP.

I have my wife's hand-me-down Omron because she got a new one which talks to her phone. Her new one is an Omron as well; I haven't heard any complaints about it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I just have no need to attach one to my phone as long as they have a memory function. They seem to sell everything now with a huge cuff then charge around £14 extra for a medium one. which doesn't have a plug so you have to fight to fit the tube onto the plug you already have. My old Omron M2 cuff doesn't fit the newer M2 Plus which comes with a cuff that's at least 10cm too big for me.

I have an Ormond and another make supplied by the pharmacy, both reliable.

My bp in hospital recently agrees with them . My omron came with an oxometer.

Qualipop profile image
Qualipop in reply toBlackknight57

which model Omron? I want the M2+ but they don't seem to do a medium size cuff for it - only for the M2.

it’s from 4 years ago, both of us are fairly slight build.

Wife had tuna in march, followed by my mi in October.

I take my bp when I feel queer, usually on the lower side 100-107.

Or when heart failure nurse telephones. Along with those reads do a Gloucester check, on dapagliflozin which tends to drop blood sugars below normal.

hi

The best one I have ever owned is the A&D recommended by cardiology at hospital I have the basic one the UA-651 which has memory and irregular heart beats I would recommend these monitors some are made in USA, some in Japan and probably China. Mine is Japanese. 22-32 cuff

Qualipop profile image
Qualipop in reply toPurpled

Sounds just what I'm looking for and the correct size cuff. I've emailed Omron so I'll see what they say before I do anything. Thanks.

try the Omron website: omron-healthcare.co.uk/bloo... - that is the page for monitors which do not connect to your phone -

i think you will find that the M3 models and higher have more memory - if you select one there is an opion for you to find nearby stockists - or, once you know the model you want you can order it from your local pharmacy - or Argos list the M2 and the M3 (as well as connected ones) but the M3 is more expensive

Qualipop profile image
Qualipop in reply tofishonabike

The Argos M2 doesn't have a memory apart from the reading you just took. I bought one and sent it back. I've gone through the Omron website in detail and the M2+ is definitely what I want but no medium cuff. I've emailed them so we shall see what they say. I bought one a couple of years ago with the big cuff and gave it to my son. The big cuff just won't fit properly on me to get a proper reading. Boots also sell it but not the medium cuff. It's ridiculous to have to buy one with a huge cuff that you know won't work then fork out another £14 for a suitable cuff. I found several medium cuffs on Amazon but they all say they fit the M2 but they don't mention the M2+. I'm sick of trying to send things back because I can't print a returns label. My printer's broken.

I looked on the Argos site, they do the M3, which as I said above, has a better memory and standard cuff size

Qualipop profile image
Qualipop in reply tofishonabike

Thanks; I didn't look further on Argos because I thought I'd found the same one I had before

Qualipop profile image

Apart from being a lot more expensive, the M3 still has the big cuff, 22-42cm. I need the 22 to 32cm.

Take a look at Which? Consumers Association (which.co.uk) website and search for blood pressure monitors (you don’t have to be a member). They test stuff very rigorously in their labs for accuracy, reliability, features, etc so worth a look.

Thanks. I know w hich I want- just can't get it . It's the cuff size that's import ant to me and almost all of them now have the bigger cuff.

AT LONG LAST. A sensible reply fro m Omron. They make exactly what I want under the Boots brand name. large memory, a separate memory button AND\ a medium sized cuff- exactly like my old one. More expensive than the Omron branded monitors though. Boots Pharmaceuticals Blood Pressure Monitor - Upper Arm Unit 60 Memories

I didn't know you there were ones with a memory! I have an omron that we had in the house prior to my condition, so I have been using that and haven't had a need to look for alternatives.

Qualipop profile image
Qualipop in reply tobaltibob

Lots of them have memories but these days they are usually all in the start button; you have to press it for several seconds to bring up the memory. My old one and this Boots one have a separate memory button but they are giving up with them and replacing with the fancy ones that connect to an app on a phone.. The Omron M2 doesn't have a memory but the M2+ does and the Boots own brand also made by Omron. When my GP wants a week's worth I can just go through the memory and copy them into an email rather than faffing with my phone.
