Trying to get travel insurance for a family vacation to USA. Being quoted from £1180 to £1560 for a 2 week break?????

Re exiting conditions I have stable Angina and had a small stroke 12 years ago. On low dose high blood pressure tablets and Altorvastatin.

Does anyone know of and could recommend an Insurer with more reasonable prices/

Some years ago I was quoted 3k Try Saga .....I've used them , actually going through conditions on the phone instead if online and found them very reasonable. ( I didn't get to US in the end!)

If you are going to the US you will pay more than going to Europe for example that's just how it is. But we are all different (destination, age, health, how long for cover etc) ,so do your own research by finding a website that covers travel insurance with pre existing medical conditions, fill in the details fully and honestly, choose some quotes that look promising and take it from there. If you have an undiagnosed condition awaiting investigation you might find some insurers will decline to cover or the premium is very high. Or talk to a local insurance broker who is incentivised to get you a deal.

Quotes depend on many factors but I used AllClear for my Australia trip and were amazed how low it was.

I use justtravelcover.com. its online and will come up with several quotes. Someone suggested puffin insurance was very reasonable . If you try both to get a quote, perhaps you would come back and tell us all how you got on.

If you wait a day or so I find that justtravel invariably come back with a 10% discount.

Having said that the US is notoriously expensive and if a cruise is involved, even more so.

A big lesson I've learned in the last 6 months on this is to take a look at what your bank offer.

With Lloyds if you upgrade your current account (I forget the name of the account) it will cost you c.£23 a month extra, in return amongst other benefits you will receive world wide travel insurance.

They have a long list of conditions you don't have to declare such as my wife's rheumatoid arthritis and my benign prostatic hyperplasia where other insurers add these to the premium...for other conditions you phone the insurance company and they will tell you how much extra to pay, for my heart attack and stents and spinal stenosis there was a charge of £84

Some friends had to cancel a cruise last year due to a fall and a broken wrist, they were paid out within two weeks of submitting their claim.

I paid £760 for very limited European cover and that didn’t include cancellation cover. Cover for the USA with medical conditions will always be dearer. It’s trial and error with finding a company. Just remember though , you never know how good insurance until you need it.

I have Saga insurance. I have annual world wide excluding USA and it is cheaper than you have been quoted. It may be the USA element that is putting cost up. Worth a try.

I’ve recently taken out travel insurance with insuranceand go. They were pleasant and helpful on the phone while I went through my list of health problems for myself and husband. For annual Europe including cruise cover it was £1300 which I thought was good as some companies wouldn’t even cover us and were unpleasant in their questioning. Hope you get sorted and enjoy your travels

We have a Lloyds Premium bank account with travel insurance included. When we went to USA last year we rang them and gave them my medical issues and it came out with a one off £150.00 which covered a year. I know we pay for it with a monthly fee too. But that covers the whole family as well. Also covers AA fees.

Best quote I had was from my house insurer!

Tried several and they ranged from £1k to over £5k, home insurer came in at about £700.

I tried a selection of companies online recently and they all ask exactly the same questions, although the premiums were different.

Have you tried Insurance With, founded by a person who was struggling to find affordable travel insurance with an ongoing health condition

Hi insurance can be a real problem I have found Goodtogo very reasonable. Make sure you use medical insurance companies which use medical staff instead of relying on algorathims

I had a heart attack in 2017. On very similar meds as you. We used Tesco last time we went to the states. £450. Worth a try.

hi. Not sure how old you are but if you are under 74 the nfop offer full cover without medical screening for about £500 a year worldwide. Also nhsrf if you are a retired nhs employee or civil servant. Worth a try.

give Puffin Insurance a try. We have used them for the past three cruises. We both have preexisting conditions that they will cover at reasonable premiums.

Payingtoomuch

Insureandgo

Avanti (cheaper than Staysure but a Staysure company)

Both AgeUK and Saga are pricey, but expect to pay more for USA anyway. Have you thought about putting yourself on one policy and the family on another?

All Clear without a doubt I’ve used them for a few years now. Get a quote for a yearly one as well as it can work out great if you go abroad more than once a year 😎

I was over £800 last year but went to U.S.A. But I’ve been 5 holidays last year so well worth it. Europe a lot cheaper

Before taking out travel insurance make sure the insurance company have a good reputation for paying claims.

Recently had this problem although not to the US. I also found AllClear the best. However, while searching I found it was often considerably cheaper to go for annual insurance rather than single trip which was sometimes quoted at twice the price of annual insurance, counterintuitive though that may be. Always worth checking both.
