Mitraclip

Has anyone here had this done? And how have you been since? My husband has severe mitral regurgitation and tricuspid reg. nearly as bad. He is, however, deemed too old for OHS so it is proposed they fit the mitraclip and he has recently had a workup for it. It is a big deal here, with his having to be approved by an accreditation committee and filling in all kinds of forms eg health directive, dental checkups etc. I have fingers and toes crossed it will go ahead - the cardiologist and surgeon say he is a suitable candidate for it - just waiting on the committee's decision. (This is Queensland, by the way, so rules prob. different from the UK.)

Thanks so much for replying. 💖 I have been thinking I would wait a few more days and post again. This procedure seems to be similar to TAVI but they place a clip on the mitral valve instead of replacing it.

Thanks again, however I'm in Australia. The hospitals here give out leaflets which explain it all, but it's good to hear from patients who have had it done. Just as an aside, he had a quad bypass in 2000! and the doctor said the grafts were still in very good condition. (His surgeon at the time used to carry out transplants so was a top man.)

Hello! İ haven't had a mitral clip fitted but have been told by my cardiologist that this would be best for me when operation time comes. The problem is that İ would not get it at the current time on the NHS in Britain. Only a lucky few get it. İt is unfortunately all about money. A group of surgeons are lobbying our government to try and change the situation. We have the lowest rate in Europe. (Article in Daily Mail online on 26th May 2024 explains the situation, entitled 'NHS denies thousands of heart patients keyhole operation that could transform their lives and reduce their risk of death'.)İ hope someone who has had a mitral clip answers. İ would be interested too. Wishing you all the best x

I'm not sure if we can get it free on Medicare in Aus - I think so - but hubby is going privately and so far his doctors have just been charging what we get back from our private health fund - that is no gap fee. You just can't walk in and ask for it though - have to go through heaps of tests and be a high risk for OHS. Thank goodness the Accreditation Committee has passed him for it. I hope you are able to have it when the time comes.
