I’m new here I have a quick question on bisoprolol
Back in November I started greeting palptions throughout the day all test have been carried out x rays, echo, ecg and stress test everything came back normal
they put it down to having ectopic beats and since been prescribed bisoprolol I have avoided taking this since Nov 23 hoping to give it chance and hoping it goes away
but it hasn’t now 9 months down line I have suffered palptions day in day out and I can’t deal with it
I took my first dose on Friday isit normal to still feel palptions while on bisoprolol does it take a while to have these medications kick in?
Or should it stop palptions from the first dose?
please help I really don’t wana be going higher than 1.25mg
thanks

Hi, I am on the same dose since a sudden cardiac arrest in January. Firstly my understanding is that Bisoprolol is definitely not a stop start drug. It should be taken continuously and takes a while to settle the body into a routine new normal. It is usually prescribed to control arythmias in my case to stop high dangerous peaks. It also acts on blood pressure. As well as the SCA risk my normal heart rhythm is Bradycardia with ectopics. Resting HR is typically 40 and I can have ectopics generally 1/2 every minute. The only way I am aware of these is by taking my pulse when I can feel the irregularlity.
My Bradycardia was assessed around 9 years ago and I was told this is not a condition to worry about not the ectopics. There is no specific link with my subsequent atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia for which bisoprolol is prescribed.
Because I have a low resting HR my bisoprolol is at the lowest 1.25mg dose. It can be dosed up to 10mg.
The lowest resting HR I have detected is 34bpm which is low!! But doesn't cause me any anxiety.
The ectopics also don't cause me any anxiety. Why shouldn't a 72 year old pump not have the odd missed beat!?
In the other hand, my HR climbing to 160 in a blink of thinking about exercise is a concern! BUT if I stop or slow down it will fall back equally quickly and then generally I can settle it at 120-130 with the tempo of jogging I exercise at. Very slow btw.
It is helpful to understand your body and issues, in order to live your life to it's fullest. I have slowed down a bit with the running but upped my walking to compensate.
Bisoprolol is intended to slow your heart rate. It may have some slight anti arrhythmic effects as well.
This drug should normally start working within half an hour of taking it. I know this because of the numerous times I have presented at A^E with persistent fast AF . The drug of default there is Bisoprolol ....I'm usually started on 2.5mg and then titrated up to 10mg if no effect within 30/60 minutes.
Why are you frightened of taking this if you have never tried it? I know it doesn't suit everyone but it gives a great deal of help to the majority. 1.25mg is a tiny dose so maybe you need to go higher. Do speak to your GP.
(Incidentally , I've been prescibed Bisoprolol to take when I have an AF episode.)
I’ve been on Bisoprolol since diagnosis for angina in January at 1.25 mg. Fast forward to today and recovering in hospital from cabg last week my heart rate shot up to 125, 60-70 resting is my norm. So I was trebled on the med and still on now but it a very effective medication and I felt fine with it before surgery at 1.25. I may even come off it or onto something else in the future if the cabg I had has a positive effect
You were prescribed a medication and didn't take it. After nearly a year, you might need to get yourself checked out again as your condition seems to have worsened and you might either need a stronger dose or to take another as well or just merely start taking it regularly.
I'm on Bisoprolol for frequent ecopics (10,000 per day). It doesn't stop the frequency of them for me, but it does lessen the "thud" feeling of ectopics so that I'm not focusing on them all the time. Bisoprolol also has additional benefits like keeping BP low
it’s day 4 for me since iv started using bisoprolol still feel the ectopic beats as it’s really annoying more than anything as it is defects me on a daily basis can’t be myself, i will give it a run hopefully they start to work soon!
Due to also being asthmatic they wanted to start me on a lower dose to see how I feel doesn’t trigger the asthma side of things fingers crossed but will let it build up hopefully I can start to feel a difference soon
It was pretty much a reduction straight away. I was getting a massive increase of them around perimenopause and I think this triggered my SVT. I was prescribed Bisoprolol for SVT but thankfully it also controls my ectopics. I’m having an ablation later this month for SVT.
