Hayfever and beta blockers

Does anyone with bad hayfever and dust allergies take bisoprolol or beta blockers and have any minor side effects like uncomfortable back of throat, stuffy nose and sometimes little breathlessness? I've spoken to my cardiologist and gp they said they will swap me to something else just wanted to seek anyone's advice or experience

Hello :-)

Before I started taking Bisoprolol I used to get hayfever and allergies to dust etc but I have never related since Bisoprolol making it worse as mine is so much worse than it was and I can relate to when my nose gets blocked that it makes my breathing feels worse sometimes it can take me all day to realise my nose is blocked and why I have been feeling more breathless as I have not been breathing up and down my nose and when it does clear I then notice I am breathing as I should now

My Doctors insist I stay on Bisoprolol so it is good yours are willing to try you on something else and I hope it will then be better when they do

Let us know how you get on :-) x

Hello :-)

I think I have sinus issues as well as rather than been able to blow my nose it seems to go backwards and into my throat instead

Have you tried steaming getting a hot bowl of water and seeing if that loosens it at all sometimes it has helped me other times it has not

I am on 2.5 mg

It will be interesting when they change you med if it makes a difference I hope you will have time and be able to let me know :-) x

I've suffered similar symptoms since 2.5mg bisoprolol was issued as part of suite of meds following HA in April. I also have a very low resting heart rate (high 30's at its lowest). GP has given me a 28 day prescription of 1.25mg but don't think it's made any difference to the stuffiness/breathing and RHR is still in the 30's and 40's. I've just asked for review to either stop or replace. Will be interesting to see how we are hopefully helped to overcome the unpleasant side effects..

I have had "hayfever" type symptoms ever since 2002 when I started aged 43. This was due to moving to a rural area and being exposed to numerous clouds of chemical spray from local farms borne on the wind. Had HA in 2021 since when I have been on bisoprolol 5mg. Hayfever symptoms are constant but I can't say whether they are worse or not as previously they were ongoing with odd periods of respite!

I have allergies to house mites dust and mould spores so take cetirizine for those. I also take Bisoprolol - I have no ill effects from taking both tablets.

Well, based on my experience with bisoprolol, it’s almost certainly the bisoprolol causing your symptoms. Mine were so bad I was actually referred to ear, nose and throat. I got a free ear and hearing check, and my ears vacuumed. Which was nice. And didn’t help. But when I finally stopped taking the wretched stuff , the runny nose and blocked etruscan tubes stopped.

Hey MikeBB,I'm curious whether your GP stopped the bisoprolol or you just decided to stop yourself?

My GP won't stop mine, I've considered just stopping because I'm relatively young and in good nick (apart from the cabg in 2018)

I really think they cause my runny/blocked nose.

Great question. I guess one should never act unilaterally and the reality is that I discussed it with my gp. Now, get this. The cardiologist said it couldn’t be the cause. The ENT consultant said it couldn’t be the cause, and the gp said the same.

So I took another approach and said to him that I wanted an alternative. The key words seem to be ‘I’m not responding well to this. Please find me another option.” It’s probably better not to outline what we went with, but I’m happy with it.

BP is fine. Everyone seems happy. I’m feeling much better and life wasn’t great on the biso.

On a related note, I was having dreadful trouble with statins. Same discussion, and I have an alternative. My cholesterol is stable at 5.6 and while I know some people would say that is too high, I don’t care. It’s lower than it was before I started taking statins 25 years back. Because I’d rather enjoy life than suffer the dreadful cramps and other side effects that I no longer have.

Best wishes.

Thank you so much for replying, and you're right about not just stopping, I'll try asking for something else and see if I have more luck.

It's funny you mention cramps and statins, because guess what I suffer from and what I also take 😂

One thing at a time.

How long did it take for your symptoms to stop after switching? I have a runny nose/sneezing every day.

I take a Bystolic called Nebivolol with Loratadine with no side effects/interactions between the meds. I hope you find a combination that works for you.
