stents to Lad
IMHO, it’s more to do with the cardiologists than the hospital. I had my stenting performed by Dr [REDACTED] in the Royal Victoria in Belfast. He was described to me by the medical staff next morning as being “world renowned”. My wife researched him and found that he does travel extensively and has introduced a number of innovations. That was over four years ago, so he may not be there now.
rather depend on severity and your location. Im lucky to have Papworth in my doorstep.
What sort of expertise are you seeking?
There are several very good heart centres all over the UK.
In London Barts, St Thomas's Hospital, Royal Free, Royal Brompton and Harefield ( now joined with St Thomas') Kings, St George's and Hammersmith Hospital.
Angioplasty is such a common and routine procedure that I’m not sure anywhere or any one doctor/team would be regarded as “the most specialised”. I’ve had them done in Croydon and St George’s and the whole exercise was exactly the same in both.
thank you for your reply .I originally had the coronary angioplasty done but they said they could not put a stent in due to no suitable landing point .so refer me to surgeon who was reluctant to do surgery as only 70% blockage and very few symptoms . then on a further consultation decided to put me on the list for bypass early 2025.i have since seen another senior consultant who thought it could be stented using 2 stents and has scheduled me in for echo cardiogram stress test to see the bigger picture? this has been ongoing now for 18 months and as you will probably understand I am getting more confused, the question I was asking is if it can be stented but my hospital does not have the expertise should I look elsewhere or just go with there findings ,probably just thinking out loud here .thank you for your patience 😢
I'm not surprised you're confused; it would help if they didn't keep changing their minds! Obviously, an angioplasty with stents would be preferable to open heart surgery for a bypass, as it is far less risky and with a far quicker recovery time. I don't really understand what they mean by "no suitable landing point" for the stent. My second procedure was for a blocked artery at a junction. They couldn't put in a traditional metal stent, so they did it with a balloon stent. That was 5 years ago, and annual echocardiograms show that it's doing fine (as is my 6yo metal stent). I'd be inclined to see what the stress test shows, and hope that the consultant is willing to try another angioplasty, before going ahead with a bypass, especially as you have very few symptoms. If he says no, ask for a second opinion. As it's been going on for 18 months, they clearly don't seem to think it's too urgent. Good luck!
Royal Stoke, whose cath-labs have been featured on ‘999 critical care’ a few times. Had both Angioplasty and PM there and they are excellent.

Liverpool Heart and Chest hospital are excellent . I had a stent in my LAD when completely blocked.
I guess it depends where you live and what hospitals carry the procedure (have an Cath lab) out where you live. In Manchester we have two Wythenshawe and Manchester Royal.
