Mitral Valve Operation Success Story

Lived with a mitral valve issue since born 50 years ago, when i hit 40 the regurgitation reached severe but no symptoms, wythenshawe hospital monitored me every 6 months for change and last year decided to put me on the waiting list when they thought it was time to intervene.

Had the operation OHS 10 weeks ago now for a valve repair. After a tricky start in ICU for 5 days due to a punctured lung during the procedure, last week i was given the great news that it was all a success. My fitness is coming back and feel best ive felt in years.

All i would like to say to people who are worried about going in for heart operations, yes it's worrying pre-op but honestly all worth it for how you could feel 10 weeks post op.

Hello. 👋🏾 Thank you so much for your post. It is really encouraging. I have severe mitral valve regurgitation as well as severe aortic valve stenosis due to a bicuspid aortic valve. Will definitely require OHS. Similar age to you and have been apprehensive about surgery but posts like yours are so encouraging. Thank you so much ❤️

I'm on a loonnnggg waiting list for mitral valve repair/replacement so to read your words of encouragement was huge for me. Thank you for enabling me to decide to stay on the list rather than opt out because of sheer stress!

Keep with it and definitely stay on the list. Have they said how long the waiting list is ?

I waited 2 days short of a year, convinced the hospital would have not met target if gone over a year ????

Don't enquire how much for the operation to be done privately, the cost is eye watering, i joked that i would need to sell a kidney to mend my heart.

Stick with it and convinced when it's done you will be able to reply and help people also.

Good luck.

Eye watering is a bit of an understatement! Mine are streaming.😂

apparently the routine waiting list goes back to June 21 for the angiogram and then on to the waiting list for surgery. I’m on an urgent list and should get angiogram by October 24 then onto waiting list for surgery by which time it’ll be 2 years since I went to my GP. !! The NHS is on its knees but thank you for the warning about private surgery. ‘Can’t take it with you’ springs to mind!
