Beta blockers from sceptical cardiologist post

I'm always looking for different views from experts on heart medications as there is a general view that not everyone fits the same model of prescription.

Interesting read.

After having personal experience of this and reading of many others, I am sure that there are many people on these drugs who do not need to be, and are suffering because of them. There is no doubt that for people who have a reduced EF they are an effective way of preventing further events, but for those who have preserved EF's they may very well be actually hindering them. I have always found it rather odd that we are told repeatedly to undertake regular exercise as part of a lifestyle change (for some people), and then given BB's which at best reduce you capacity to do so and at wort stop you altogether. The reason is fairly obviously that there is not enough capacity within the NHS to treat individuals subjectively and we are all therefore discharged with a "general" prescription which includes BB's. I was warned about this by a friend of a friend who is a Nurse as soon as I was discharged, and I believe she was 100% correct. For me they were awful drugs!

Great 👍 thought provoking post baly. When my stenosis was confirmed following an Angiogram spring 2022 I was firmly told that I should be on Bisoprolol + Simvastatin + Aspirin +Omeprazole. Though my stenosis was severe I'd not had a heart attack-low BMI - playing social tennis 3 times a week etc. Resting heart rate high 50 bpm to low 60bpm. Blood pressure normal why do I need to take betablokers?

Fortunately (though not a cardiologist) my GP agreed and I didn't take Bisoprolol. So, your post set me 🤔 thinking particularly after the announcement of the new weight loss drug that was all over the news.

The greatest breakthrough since the 1990's and statins it trumpeted 🎺.

On reading more it went on to say that computer modelling would suggest that the government could save millions by giving those considered at risk of developing heart disease a fortnightly injection.

There's some very bright sales people out there and if they can show rather than tell 😉 that there are potentially large savings to be made by purchasing their wonder drugs it's hard for any public health body to resist.

I think that's the nub of it. I'm convinced betablokers would not have been beneficial to my health any more than Statins but there go.

Best regards,

Denis
