Hello, my husband suffers with AF and after 3 failed cardioversions last year, he had an ablation yesterday though the chest. He was in theatre for a few hours and he is still in absolute agony in his chest, shoulders and back and can not move. Hes in hospital and they’re giving him painkillers, but he’s worried and waiting on the doctors to do their rounds to find out what’s going on.
Has anyone else on here had this procedure? Is this a common after effect? To be in agony?
Thank you

My husband had an extensive & very invasive ablation that took 6&1/2 hrs last year, though for his was for VT's not AF.
Obviously ask the drs but I think some discomfort is too be expected as the heart has been very irritated, that how it was explained to my husband. Your husband's pain does seem to be a bit excessive though, I hope the drs are able to put your minds at rest. Good luck
Yes, I had this when I came around from the anaesthetic and had to be knocked out again with intravenous fentanyl as I could not stand the excruciating pain. I had pericarditis and oesophagitis caused by the ablation, was then initially put on morphine & then colchicine tablets. I had to eat cold pureed foods too for a couple of weeks to allow the oesophagus heal.
It one of the side effects listed on the consent form that we sign 😔
You wouldn't expect to be in this much pain after a normal ablation. However you say this was through the chest. What kind of ablation was this ? Was it a mini maze procedure? Or endo-epicardial ?
At least he's in the best place to be treated. Which hospital is he in? Do let us know how he gets on.
Yep, it (bloody) hurts; part of the process of being thoroughly pummelled. Goes eventually.
Relaxxxxxx. Read about it all; it`s YOUR heart. Plenty of handouts in hospitals. Get an A level in cardiology, haha. The more you learn, the more you understand when the surgeon talks to you. Mine took me to the `doctors rooms` and showed me a body plan. Explained WHY he was doing WHAT he was doing. BING! All made sense.
