hi my 10 year old son has just been told after a 48 hour ecg that they’ve found he has 2nd degree mobitz 1 av block, he has constant chest pain and dizziness effecting his life a lot, peadiatrics referred him to a cardiologist after finding this and I’ve just recieved a letter from the cardiologist to say an appointment with them is not required at this time and they’ll tell our GP appropriate advice and guidance as to how best to proceed with his ongoing care. I’m extremely confused, when peadiatrics first told me about the finding he mentioned a pace maker and all sorts and I was so confused and worried and in shock and now it seems it’s not even serious enough for him to be seen by a cardiologist, I’m not sure if this is normal or ok or if he is just been parmed off I just really need any advice as Ive never dealt with anything like this and right now I just feel frustrated and confused as to what’s going on. Thank you

Hi Mummyof 23333

Sorry to hear you son is poorly. I would certainly advise booking an appointment with your GP to get further advice. As far as I am aware there are degrees of heart block and treatment depends on the degree of heart block and patient symptoms. Given the symptoms your son is having I think it would be a good idea to book in to discuss further with your GP. I was born with total or third degree heart and did not need a pacemaker until I was in my 40s. I wish you and your son well and hope you get some answers soon.

If the tests show that he has Stage 2 Type 1 heart block, then a pacemaker may not be warranted. I would follow up to get at least 2 professional opinions (from electrophysiologists) on that question plus set up a plan for retesting him periodically for any changes. Type 1 can progress to Type 2, but not necessarily. The definitions for the Stages of heart block are outlined in this article...

Good luck to you and your boy.
