went back to work in december on half shifts 7pm to 1am after heart attack , anyway last week went and did my first full shift 7pm to 7am but when i got home i couldnt sleep so rang in sick anyway next 3 nights struggled to sleep 3 hours 2 hours and 1hour because i was wanting sleep the mind works against you dont it ,anyway went to docs prescribe me zoplicone for 2 weeks 1every other night took one first night great sleep anyway next night struggled a bit but got about 4 hours, next night took another and great then 5 hours sleep with out ,anyway went back to work half shift while waiting to go on perm days 6th march , it through my sleep pattern out couldnt sleep , went to chemist brought some nytol and herbal sleep tablets took them last night and was just wide awake all night done nothing made it worse ,but i since read you shouldnt have them with amlodipne or ramipril ( chemist said it was ok ) as can cause low blood presure and change of pulse , now would that keep me awake and stop me sleeping ? I am going back in chemist and kicking off , and will i be ok to take my zoplicone tonight ? I am off work now till 6th march so got a while to get sleep pattern back , just at my wits end now having no sleep cant be doing with having one good day one bad day , was in a great routine befire inbed asleep within 20 minutes up between 7/8 everyday , do a walk and then hit the gym ,now i feel like doing nothing and its knocking the stuffing out of my ,sorry for a long rant

Hello :-)

I am sorry you are still struggling with your sleeping since going back to work and I think it maybe a case of even though it is frustrating and no doubt leaving you tired and feeling not so good when you cannot sleep you might have to just hang in there till your body adjusts and your sleeping comes back to what it was

You are right though the more we have not sleeping on our minds the more we tend to not sleep I once struggled with sleeping still do to some extent but was not sleeping at all at the time and someone said to me you will sleep when you are ready but the more you have it on your mind the longer it will take and they were right

Personally the sleeping tablets the Doctor gave you would be stronger than anything you can buy over the counter and I would not have mixed them in between with nytol and herbal

Did you tell the pharmacy you were on prescribed sleeping tablets and intended to take them in between and would that be safe ?

If not if you are going back to have a word with them I would mention it

Again and this is just me I would leave of the sleeping tablet tonight as you do not have work and start again just using the prescribed ones every other night your Doctor gave you

I hope now you are of till the 6th March you can get that sleeping pattern back but try not to overthink it and let it happen naturally and it will :-) x

Hi no i brought them a few hours before my appoint ment with the doc , but the pharmist got my prescription up and should of known 2 of my tablets can interact with the ingrediants of nytol , so shall i take prescribe one tonight and start a fresh ? Ive thrown my nytol in the bin .

Hello :-)

I remember taking nytol years ago it made me feel like I was hung over the next day and did not work

Difficult question so I will only say what I would do but that does not mean you have to but I think I would take nothing tonight and start again tomorrow night with the prescribed ones from the Doctors it is no good me saying phone the chemist for advice as they seem to have messed up already

I have always been a dreadful sleeper and since my heart attacks and heart meds I am worse than ever now but what I do is I do not go to bed till I am that tired I know I will sleep it can be 2 in a Morning but at least I go to sleep then and do not have time to start thinking about it as I am exhausted

I also used to read in bed and that must have eventually sent me to sleep as I would wake up with my Kindle on the floor ( surprise it never broke )

The other thing I was told to do is no matter what time I ended up going to sleep get up the same time every day ( if you can ) don't have a lay in as then you will not want to sleep that night so to set my alarm that would be hard going if you had only had a few hours sleep but I would be tired that night and want to go to bed

Just be careful with all these sleeping aids stick with what your Doctor has advised and just try and get in that mind set this is going to take time to adjust but eventually you will do :-) x

BeKind28- in reply to yellow731

Hello :-)

You have a good healthy routine there with the walking and gym

Was it a full bottle of wine you drank it could not be wind I do not think anyway but if it was a ful bottle of wine that is not good for your health or when you are talking meds and you won't find the answer in the bottom of a bottle either :-)

I do understand you want your routine back and how difficult this must be I hate my routine in any way been upset but it is all going to be down to patience and time never easy but you will get there :-) x

Hello :-)

Come on you are better than this and stronger I can sense that and drinking and smoking is not going to help you health or solve this

You need to think of a plan I do not know your options but could you ask if you could work just days only as you are now struggling with shift work

Could you maybe look at other jobs that are not shift work

Possibly talking with your Doctor again and see what support they can give

Sounds like today is not a good one so maybe start again tomorrow leave the wine and smoking and make a plan how you can try and work but at the same time look after your health as well :-) x

Well that is good news that you start days when you go back on the 6th :-)

Just be patient now and let your body adjust and you will soon be back in your routine :-) x

BeKind28- profile image
BeKind28- in reply to yellow731

Hello :-)

I think you should stop drinking now and think of your heart

It is no good going to the gym and walking and then pouring wine down you that is defeating the object

Back to the question of should you take a sleeping tablet tonight now I know you have been drinking I would say 150% NO do not take any sleeping tablets tonight at all or any other substance you are going to end up in Hospital if you carry on

Take a nice bath or shower , sit and watch something on TV and just try and relax think of your heart please this is not helping it at all :-)

Let me know how you are feeling tomorrow :-) x

Hello :-)

I have never heard of anyone that has died of a lack of sleep they may not feel great because they have not slept but as far as I know is not a cause of death

But I have heard of people taking tablets and drinking with a heart condition ending up in Hospital and some not coming out again

I can tell you are very low today and better even if you are just resting to get through till tomorrow without tablets or drink and if you are feeling as bad in the Morning then phone your Doctors and ask for an appointment tell them it needs to be that day you are so low but hopefully tomorrow you may feel a little more positive

If you struggle this evening you can always phone the Samaritans I have often when I have felt so low telephone 116 123 if you feel you want to talk with them

Or you can text SHOUT AT 85258 again if you feel you need to talk because you are struggling

Stay safe this evening and I hope tomorrow is a better day and you feel more positive :-) x

Why am i not sleeping all of sudden ? Why have i gone from great routine to scared to sleep x

BeKind28- profile image
BeKind28- in reply to yellow731

Maybe because you lost your routine going back to work and you are a person that needs routine as some of us do and it is making you feel scared and you are focusing on sleep which the more you do that the worse it will feel

I know you have been drinking today but have you eaten

You need to get something to eat if you have not eaten , take your heart medications only and nothing else if you are due for them , maybe take a nice bath or shower and just let nature take its course till eventually you sleep itis only 7.15 pm so you could watch a good movie or something to distract your mind

I really don't know of any other advice I can give you but give this a go and see how you are tomorrow :-) x

Might be a good idea to speak to one of the BHF cardiac nurses tomorrow? They must have come across this before with people who have had heart attacks. They can probably help you. They're on 0808 802 1234 between 9am to 5pm

I believe you have had some very good advice from BeKind28- which is to lay off the plonk, get some food inside you, watch something you fancy on TV, take the meds you have been prescribed and have an early night. From what you have told us you are now signed off until you return to work on 6Mar when you start days, so by then your body clock will have hopefully sorted itself out. So the only major conflict that you may be faced with is whether you are comfortable with continuing with day work longterm rather than resuming shift work at some point, bearing in mind that shift work, even for young fully fit people without any medical issues, can be very demanding.

I took my meds i dont miss them i had 5 bottles of wine i was sober despite being awake 48 hours went down stairs took a zoplicone at 11 got into bed and gone now was it the zoplicone or the wine because i wasnt awake long enough for the zoplicone to kickin but it was 7.02 am and that will do ,round 2 tonight and no zoplicone

Lowerfield_no_more profile image
Lowerfield_no_more in reply to yellow731

I am pleased you appear to have had a good night's sleep. However irrespective of how many bottles of wine you had, according to NHS advice re Zoplicone you should not be drinking alcohol with it, under any circumstances. Plus if you have a heart condition it is also not recommended, just like smoking. With apologies for stating the obvious I suggest you use your time off work to try to re-establish a pattern of normality which will be good for both your mental and physical health, and prepare you for a return to work under a better working environment for you. But if you find your insomnia continues or returns go and speak with your GP and and share your circumstances honestly including your drinking. Hope you get sorted.

Hi Yellow731. Sleep is a funny thing - once we start to have bad nights we then start to think that we are going to continue having them which in turn cause bad nights . It's a vicious circle so you need to break that circle. Go back to basics. You said that you would watch TV in bed - that's a no no! It over stimulates your brain. No tech gadgets 1 he before bed. Look up sleep hygiene and get more tips. Alcohol and nicotine are also stimulants just like cafine. The lack of sleep can also stimulate. Try and nap during the day if you can just so that your mind can start to relax again to sleep. If you can't nap just rest. Use a sleep/relaxation app to help.

You could also try something weighted on top of you in bed. The weighted feeling relaxes us. Also be warm under the bed clothes but the room be cool in temperature.

When I can't sleep I will lie in bed and just think how comfortable and warm I am and at least I can rest my body. Sleep eventually will come.

I hope the above will help. Everything seems worse with lack of sleep. Try and relax your mind about it - I am sure if will return.

You have come so far in the past 7 months. You will also come over this.

Have a read of this article on 4-7-8 breathing technique. It works for me when I have difficulty getting to sleep. The idea is simple but it takes a little practice and it can be hard to do when you’re stressed or anxious about not getting to sleep. Persevere with it a few times, it seems to be more effective the more you do it. All the best.

Feel so sorry for you, there's nothing worse than no sleep especially when you have to go to work. I don't know how you manage. I don't sleep at all well patterns s bit like yours but I console myself by saying thank God I don't have to go to work feeling so tired, being older and retired in that respect is a good thing. As for the pharmacist this is what worries me about pharmacists in shops having all this new funding to see patients and prescribe while GP and hospitals under so much pressure. I asked one in my local supermarket last year about the antibiotics my GP had prescribed because my face was swollen and I really didn't feel well his response was "you have to get on with it and take the course prescribed" , the following day I managed to get an appointment with my GP who told me I was having an allergic reaction to the antibiotics and to stop them immediately and start antihistamines.

Naturally I was not happy with the supermarket pharmacist and didn't go back and tell him but it's out me off seeking their help or advice ever again.

It's good to have a rant especially when your not sleeping it's like torture I really feel for you.

Well i had the wine and took a zopiclone knocked me out for 8 hours 2 nights a go , last night took a zopiclone at 10 .30 slept till 5.47 , as just couldnt face another sleepless night ,had my porridge and my meds around 7 like i normally do , ran a bath laid in there , and i nodded of i actually nodded off was only for around 5/10 minutes , so do i tonight take my last zopiclone and get a 3rd night of sleep on the trot which then reduces the anxiety of sleep , my method behind the thinking is the more nights i sleep the less tired i will be my mental health wont be effected so wont get stressed at bedtime hoping i sleep and losing the battle before ive even got into bed , nearly brought cigs the other night so pleased i didnt .but its amazing having 2 nights sleep on the trot
