It would have to be sedation for me, Audi1955😵🥴

All the best.

I am a timid ' squeaker' but had this done when the docs. wanted to take a pic of the back of my heart before a hole in the heart procedure. I had a throat spray to dull the sensation and a mild sedation and it was over before i realised it had been done .That was ten years ago .It will be be ok.try not to worry and take lots of deep breaths for a few mins before they do it....and do ask someone to hold your hand if you feel the need.

I have had at least three gastroscopies. You will be offered sedation and a throat spray, so you will not be fully aware of what's going on. All I can say is I have had a lot worse! Hope all goes well .

hallo Audi.I have had this done twice once with sedation and next without, first time like yourself I was scared and worried so had the sedation which was no problem , had to go through it again a year later and on the day with a lot of assurance from the team went for no sedation and apart from being not very nice got through it OK, if you listen to the team and do all they ask they will ask you to swallow as they insert the tube, it is really not that bad, if you can't manage it they will quickly sedate you so try not to worry it really isn't that bad.

Hope all goes well for you 👍👍

Hi, I have had this done three times, with sedation and like a previous response, did not even know it had been done.

I’ve had it done a couple of times. I didn’t bother with sedation and I didn’t have any problems. My wife had sedation and although she was terrified she said the experience was great. Off with the fairies for a couple of hours with no after effects.

Wow 👌

I took the sedation, thinking it would just make me drowsy, but I went off to sleep and didn't know a thing about it. Little bit of dribble though. You will be fine 😊

This was me before Christmas / I have an extreme aversion to things up nose, down throat, belly button - those 3 things make me want to cry. Learning I had to have a TOE was awful and I felt sick for weeks beforehand. Posted on here too but nothing eased my anxiety because I had a phobia.

Honestly? The worst part for me was the throat spray. The doctor warned me it tasted horrible and I heard a few people on the day ward discussing it. I actually thought it wasn’t that bad - the taste. But the throat spray was the worst part as it gives a sensation like you’re choking with each spray. I thought there would be a couple of sprays but there were about 10, then they give you the magic juice of sedation, tell you to lie on your side and I slept through the whole thing. Couldn’t believe I had worried so much about it but for me personally, the throat spray was the worst part. I had some fantastic naps in front of the Xmas tree when I got home and slept like a baby that night.

Hope this reassures you xx

Hi BeeBee79 I agree the throat spray is the worst part. For me it seemed even worse second time around yuk 😟

Hi Audi1955 I have had this procedure twice now ( in the last year) like you I was really nervous and dreading the day. I had mild sedation and throat spray and can honestly say it was over so quickly before I realised it had been done. On the first occasion I remember saying I didn’t realise and was waiting for them to start. Try to relax and not worry I’m sure you will be fine. Good luck 🍀🍀😊

Hi Audi,

Look on the positive side. This afternoon/evening, you can sit and have a beer, glass of wine, G&T or whatever , and realise that you've had it done and, hey, it wasn't that bad was it?

Pride!

Hi I had this done years ago before a procedure. I had difficulties swallowing it. I woke up sitting up in bed with a cup of tea and biscuits in front of me and my glasses on. All the best and try not to worry you’re surrounded by people who does that procedure all the time.

Hi I had it last year. Honestly not bad. I have fear of choking but I was fine. Plus didn’t mind the throat spray. I went without sedation because I live alone and had no one to take me home. Plus the clinic was so busy - I had as waiting so long in there I thought it would make it quicker. If I have it again I’d have sedation maybe - dunno- but it would have helped me feel less tense it being my first time!

Good luck - you will be fine

I was supposed to have this done, but I couldn’t tolerate it, so they gave me an MRI scan instead, which was much better. It must do the same thing or they wouldn’t have done it.

I’ve had this procedure twice now and both times was freaked out , just ask for sedation and you will know nothing about it . I went in and before I knew it was waking up feeling fine .

The thought of swallowing anything was just super scary so just ask to be sedated and it’s plain sailing .

Good luck

I recently had a gastroscopy at High Wycombe hospital and the team were excellent, I decided against sedation but did have a throat anaesthetic which tasted like strong bananas, I took a tip from the sword swallowers and desensitised my gag reflex, concentrated on breathing and relaxation, I enjoyed a running commentary and the monitor was shifted so I could watch the process, the worst part was pressure on the back of my throat from the 'scope and discomfort but it was over in 10 minutes which seemed like 5 minutes, I enjoyed NHS tea and biscuits post procedure and an hour later ate a sandwich and crunched down crisps with no problems. I do hope your gastroscopy goes as smoothly. BTW nothing was found except for mild gastritis.

No Biggie. I've had it. The stuff they spray on the back of your throat is a bit grim tasting but then it's sedation and you know nothing about it until you wake up half an hour later. Possible bit of a sore throat after bit really nothing to worry about

How did it go?

Audi1955 profile image
Audi1955 in reply toBeatles1956

Had minimal sedation and throat spray so was wide awake and aware of everything going on. It was a lot better than l feared didn't even have a sore throat after. So if l need to have another one l would not waste my time worrying about it, only took about 10 minutes aswell.

The trepidation is worse than the procedure isn't it?

It certainly is..5 weeks of worry and anxiety for me it was...and it was all over in 10 minutes without any issues or panic on the day 😀

OK! Don't hesitate to contact me if you need ANY advice/support etc. I am happy to help. I assume by your age it will be organic so no INR issues to worry about, although it's easier to control than you would imagine. Let me know when it's scheduled. And chin up, you're finally having it sorted! All the best.
