Hello.

As anyone had negative effects following mitral valve repair? even years down the line?

Surgeon repaired my leaky valve in April and I felt amazing once healed around July time. Now fast forward a few months and i feel worse than I did before she repaired my valve.

Health / fitness has declined rapidly in my eyes.

Take bisoprolol 2.5mg daily.

Hi. I had my mitral valve repaired 3 years ago and my recovery in the first 12 months was very up and down. Found myself getting tired very easily and struggled to regain fitness. I think after the initial euphoria of getting the surgery over and done with and recovering relatively quickly from that, I tried to do too much too soon which led to something of a relapse.

Speaking at the time to a friend who's a doctor, they reminded me of the trauma your body goes through after major surgery, so it is completely normal for full recovery to take a year.

I was also on Bisoprolol 2.5mg. After my surgery I was on a diuretic too (Furosemide) which I stopped after around 6 months. It was after this that I had a bit of a lull. The cardiologist recommended I went back on a half dose and that seemed to help with my energy levels.

I can only speak from my own personal experience so it may still be worth getting a second opinion from your GP, but assuming you had open heart surgery I believe the consensus is that it takes a year for your body to recover completely.

I had my bicuspid aortic valve replaced 3 years ago, almost to the day. (11/03/2020). I never did get my stamina back, not to mention any improvements as the doctors assured me I would. I'm in Dallas TX, however, and I suspect that there is some financial motivation to medicine in this country that shouldn't be a factor in the UK, but Idk... Anyhow, if I could give you one piece of advice, it would be to watch your weight. My decreased stamina made exercising very challenging and I managed to gain about 40 pounds since the surgery. I'm seriously making efforts to lose weight now, but I've never had much success with that in the past so I don't have high hopes for the future. I just realized at this point that I really have no other option. I've lost about 5 pounds in the past couple weeks but those first 10 pounds always seem to melt away pretty easily, and then I hit THE WALL🫤
