I may have to have a pacemaker fitted. Will I still be able to run long distance? What are the benefits and challenges you faced with your pacemaker... The dos and donts that May not necessarily be obvious.
I do not know yet if I will be advised to have an icd or pacemaker but thanks to everyone who responded to my post on the icd.

Not got one myself but I have friends whom got them in their 20's and many years ago before today's improved technology.One of them was a cyclist and road racer and was back on his bike and training pretty quickly. His pacemaker never stopped him.
There have also been many members on the forum whom I hope will answer you soon whom also continue to do high intensity exercise like running and swimming now they have pacemakers.
I think your ability after surgery is much like the ability after other surgeries or illnesses. You may need to take time building up to your preferred level but what you can do after a pacemaker depends a lot on age, other illnesses and your previous fitness.

When I had my pacemaker fitted, I was told that I would be able to do anything I wanted as long as it was in line with my general level of fitness.
I was told that, after the inital period (6 weeks of no reaching up or lifting etc.), I could do whatever I liked except welding - which didn't bother me! 
(I think you can do some types of welding etc.)
