my husband has just come out of hospital after having his replacement heart valve on 3 July . When he left hospital he had a bag of medicine with statin and bètablockers included . He knew he was to be on warfarin for the rest of his life , it can take a while to get it right . But if he had no problem with his heart rate , bp before why these other tablets . Also since having a catheter he’s experienced difficulty weeing . Experiencing the urge to go but not the flow

post replacement heart valve op problems , is it normal
I had a heart valve replacement on 17 June and left with a bag of drugs too. My heart is definitely beating faster than it did before surgery and I’m pretty sure the beta blockers are to help regulate it in the short term. I am on statins too, but pretty happy to accept I’d take the lot and then see how things are at my two months’ review. Can’t help with the weeing personally but the same thing happened to my dad after a hip replacement op. Unfortunately he was diagnosed with an enlarged prostrate as a result and needed minor surgery. Hopefully your husband is just a bit bruised!
thank you . The nurses never explained why all the medication x hope you’re doing well . He’s much better now he’s home from hospital
Thanks. I am 4 weeks post surgery and I’m able to move more freely and even sneezed today without it hurting. Being home helps a lot. I was so grateful to be back with my husband and my own things. It’s still early days and he’ll start to notice that things are improving soon Just getting past the surgery is a big achievement!
hi. I’ve had two replacement valve ops. I had atrial flutter after the second and saw an EP. He said that when they do valve ops they disturb the electrical circuitry in your heart which can cause temporary problems. I suspect the beta blockers are to help regulate and reduce his heart rate and relieve some pressure on the heart while it heals. I’m still on bisoprolol two years after my last ohs so it’s not unusual. As for the statins, I’m not sure but I would definitely ask his GP. As for the catheter, I don’t want to worry you but if he is struggling to pee then you need to ring 111. He could have a blockage and it needs to be checked. Hope you and your husband are both well and I wish him a speedy recovery. X
Hi Gingeramber,
I've had valve surgery on three occasions, the last in 2014.
Following each surgery, I was on medeciation for a short time, whilst my body adjusted, however, it was always intended to be a temporary measure, which turned out to be the case.
It's still very early days at this point so I wouldn't be concerned.
Best Wishes
Heed
thank you for your reply . Just understanding why but now realising this is normal
Hi
My husband was sent home (2019) after aortic surgery and mechanical replacement valve with quite a lot of different meds and I remember feeling quite overwhelmed. After a month or so my husband was only on warfarin and bisoprolol. We were told that bisoprolol was needed as open heart surgery gives everything quite a battering so bisoprolol helps settle everything. I am sure a Dr would describe it much more accurately! After several months my husband was and still is on Warfarin. When you have a mechanical valve you have to be on Warfarin for the rest of your life. I hope that in time things settle. Remember regaining fitness is a marathon not a spring. I hope all goes well!
