A&E visit

Good afternoon all. My husband called an Ambulance on Saturday as I was getting weird chest pains and palpitations. I was given all the usual checks at A&E but all came back fine, they changed my omeprazole 20mg to Lansoprazole 30mg thinking it could be a gastric problem.

I still have this pain constantly since Saturday and it is wearing me down now but I have just read my CT angiogram and they said they found a small hiatus hernia.

Has anyone else had this experience of Hiatus hernia feeling like heart pain? I will try and get a Drs appointment tomorrow if I’m lucky!!

Any help from Hiatus Hernia sufferers would be more than appreciated

Hi Mirador19

I’m sorry you’re not feeling well.

The hiatus hernia can cause chest pain which may mimic symptoms of angina, which I believe is what you’re experiencing. Please see below for the information which the NHS have on this.

It can cause acid reflux and heartburn therefore, I wonder if this is where your discomfort is coming from.

I don’t have any personal experience of this but I would suggest contacting your GP like you have said for an appointment to review the hiatus hernia and see what can be done about it.

Let us know how you get on.

All the best.

Hi

I don’t have a hiatus hernia but I have been told my heart attack type pain is down to gastrointestinal issues stimulating my vagus nerve.

I was in lansoprazole then omeprazole, and now I am on Esomeprazole but still get issues from time to time. Additionally, I have been prescribed Gaviscon advanced (it is thicker than the regular one) which I find can help calm things down.

Also I was told by a consultant that GTN spray can alleviate pain caused by reflux as well as Angina.

We are all individuals and I hope you can get this sorted out soon, I went for weeks before Esomeprazole helped me, I hope you feel better soon.

P.S. As well as the NHS info there is a forum on Healthunlocked for reflux disease.

I can understand your worry. I've had a hiatus hernia for some time , described as medium size. I take 30 mg Lansoprazole daily .

I ensure that I take this first thing in the morning before I eat anything otherwise I will experience pain of varying intensity at night time. At its worst it can feel like I imagine a heart attack would feel like !

Hiatus hernias are very common and usually treated with meds like Lansoprazole. If I (rarely) get further symptoms I take a raft antacid like Gaviscon which does the trick .

With your heart history it would be wise to seek further advice from your GP as you have indicated.

Regards

J

Thank you all for your replies, I am hoping that the dr will explain a bit more about hiatal hernia because the first I knew about was on the CT angiogram report and I don’t know much about them.

Your replies have helped a lot as I was wondering what an earth was going on as the pain was going on almost constantly. I will certainly let you know what the dr said as soon as I get an appointment.

We have the ring at 8am system here and it pot luck if you get through in time.

Many thanks once again for your replies.

l have a large hiatus hernia and AF. The symptoms of hiatus hernia can be the same as heart problems and mimic a heart attack with pain in the chest, back and stomach. The hernia can become inflamed and cause many problems, but the medication should settle it down in a few weeks. I am surprised they changed your Omeprazole to Lanzoprazole and didn’t just up your original dose for a few weeks. Lanzoprazole doesn’t work for me, but we are all different. Good you are seeing your doctor who will be able to help. If you have had ct scan the hernia wil be the problem, so try not to worry as stress will make your symptoms worse by you making more acid in the stomach. Eat small and often and nothing just before you go to bed. You can also take Gaviscon liquid along with the meds.

Thank you for your reply, this is the first time I’ve even considered the pains I get as being the H Hernia, so I will have to try to distinguish the pain from Angina / H Hernia. I’m sure once I get used to it I will be fine. I have been taking more Gaviscon double action just lately.

Yes, l have just had a flare up of my hernia and had to go for scan and barium meal. Every so often it happens so have to be careful what l eat and drink. You can get a list of “good “foods on the internet. A flare up can last a few weeks and can be very distressing. Gaviscon liquid is the best and l take it at bedtime and it helps. Hope it soon heals.

I searched Health unlocked and it has a site for Oesophageal Patients Association which covers hiatus hernia. Might be useful?
