Yeah I've heard this recently that's good that they making them mri safe means more people with pace makers get to have more invasive tests! ☺️❤️

Hi, I have a pacemaker and I have had an MRI done. The cardiac physiologist (pacing technician) changed the settings on my pacemaker before the scan and when it was over with he changed the settings back to where they were.

what I don’t understand how come my doctor didn’t know this,I might hear next that I can use my induction cooker(haven’t used it for 6 maths) thank you for replying

You should have been given information when you were discharged from the hospital regarding the use of induction ovens, mobile phones etc. Perhaps have a chat with the cardiac physiologist at your next pacing check if its not too far off or you could ring the pacing team if you have any questions. I have always found them to be very helpful and knowledgeable.

never been told when I’m being checked, I went back once since having it done as it has moved quite a bit just told if it moves any more or gets more uncomfortable give them a ring!!!!

I've had my pacemaker for 4 years. When it was put in I think I had either 2 or 3 follow up appointments to check it within a space of a few months. I now have a pacing check every 12 months. Unless your pacemaker can be accessed remotely (newer ones can) then If I was in your shoes I would give them a call and find out. No harm in asking!!

I wanted an MRI For my hip replacement and was advised that there is something they put over the pacemaker to protect it. This was Yeovil smd they gad to confirm with Exeter which pacemaker although I showed them my card. All good. Hood lu k for your hip replacement, definitely worth it.

I have a pacemaker and have had an MRI done. Your pacemaker needs to be "MRI compatible" and I think all modern ones fitted by the NHS are. Mine is two years old. So it will depend on the exact type of pacemaker that you have. A physiologist will need to put the pacemaker into "MRI mode" before the scan and reset it afterwards.

yes, if we have had the new type of pacemakers then we can have a mri. I had a knee mri few weeks back, and a guy from cardiology came down turned off my pacemaker then after mri was there to turn it back on. Clever stuff.

I can’t believe my doctor is unaware of this. I will try and get back to her thank you

Hi Dlx3. I’ve got a 5 year old ICD and have had several MRI scans (I have a brain tumour). It’s a bit of a faff having to get a pacing tech to turn it off, monitor me through the scan, then turn it on again, but there’s been no hesitation in the docs ordering it. It may depend how much your pacemaker is being used, ie if it’s pacing you 100% of the time, then they can’t turn it off, but might be able to do something else . I call it turning on the cloaking device! 😂

don’t know what mines doing just know it’s pacing at 60 they put it in after my arrest

Mine was put in as a precaution and only paces at 40, which means it’s rarely used - my sleeping heart rate occasionally drops down to that, but a quick pace will push it back up.

I was due to have an MRI on my shoulder last year, got an appointment and the day before I was due to attend, I had a call from the clinic saying that they didn’t realise I had a pacemaker, so they couldn’t do it there, I would have to go to the main hospital, as they have the the ‘facility’, whatever that is. Needless to say I never got the scan and was sent for an X-ray instead. I was aware though that the newer pacemakers are compatible.

There can be a complication if your pacemaker gets upgraded like mine. I have a CRT -P from Meditronic and it uses the two original leads from my previous pacemaker (different manufacturer) and a new Meditronic lead. Meditronic's box is MRI compatible BUT they only sanction use with their own leads. It seems obvious that it would be fine with other leads, but in these litigious times it's safer for them to say no.Luckily I haven't needed an MRI, so haven't had to test this.
