hi , new on here ! Had 3rd heart attack about 6 weeks ago , awaiting for bypass but apparently I’m high risk , got pre op next week 31st in Southampton but had to have dental check , my dentist has said I’m not fit for surgery and has referred me to get this sorted
I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience with teeth and if yes did this prolong procedure
Not asking for medical advice just trying to get my head around it all

Is your dentist suggesting you apply for treatment at the dental dept. of Southampton hospital? His staement sounds vague.getting treatment at a hospital dental dept may mean a long wait so it may be a good idea to involve you cardiologists/surgeons.
no he referred me sep 2022 to the royal Surrey been waiting for an appointment , but since that had heart attack etc , called the hospital and have left messages but no response, just trying to get my head sorted for when I have pre-op
Not sure what to expect from pre-op now as I thought procedure would be in the next few weeks , I do have a few medical problems one being unstable angina and getting quite a few attacks , just a bit worried really
Dear Jcdg
A warm welcome to the forum .
I am sorry that you have all the worry about your teeth { gums } on top of your heart problems. I would contact the Heart nurses at Southampton and voice your concern to them even the Cardiologists secretary / team member, who can add some push their end for you.
I hope you get you mouth sorted, you will be well looked after in Southampton as I was .
Good luck with it all, Southampton asked me about my oral hygiene { letter from my dentist } but I was having a bypass done so I don't think its as important to have the all clear as it is for valve surgery.
Please remember that you are not alone and we are here to help, we genuinely understand your worries and fears.
I had my triple nearly 46 years ago, next time I visited my dentist I was amazed to be told that the hospital had consulted him about the state of my teeth!
Probably I thought to do with bad teeth which may harbour bad decay causing harmful bacteria etc to be in your blood stream. So not helpful in recovering from a bypass!
I think it is pretty normal practice for the Cardiac Surgeon to ask for Dental Check or Dental Records prior to Bypass surgery. I thought the reason was because of the Anaesthetic !! I know my Surgeon wanted them and I don't have false teeth etc lol.
I had a Brain Haemorrhage a few years before my surgery and the Cardiac Surgeon said he wouldn't do the surgery unless the Neuro Surgeon had checked it out, and wrote to him to say it was safe because of the Heparin used in Bypass Surgery. So they are very careful before they start working on you lol
hi , sorry for all you’ve been through and I sincerely hope your through the other side 🙂
Thank you for your kind words , I had pre op yesterday and met my consultant and he is going ahead with triple bypass in the next few weeks so now getting mentally prepared for op
