Hi everyone, I had a cardiac mri yesterday but as I was so nervous my heart rate was over 100 the whole time I was in there. I’m now worried the pictures won’t be as good quality. Has anyone else had fast heart rate during mri and it been ok.

Hi Gc39

I’m sorry to hear you’re feeling anxious about your results from the MRI.

Was the test conducted with or without a stress agent, i.e. I recently had one done and it was with adenosine. When done with a stress agent, they expect your heart rate to increase in order to see the effects of stress on your heart, this is why they administer it.

Thanks for replying, This wasn’t a stress mri it was with contrast to check for inflammation etc.

I wouldn’t be overly concerned about it. I believe that if they were not happy with a certain aspect of the test such as the heart rate, they would have expressed that during the time of taking the images and perhaps stopped, waited for your heart rate to come down and re-start the images.

The MRI will show this trust me, they give the doctors an exact picture of your heart. If anything they will be in a position to identify the problem easier.

Stay strong my friend.....

If they put what looked like ECG leads on you, then it will be a cardiac gated MRI which means that the scanner does its scanning at the exact same point in the ECG cycle to try and keep the images as free as possible from movement artifacts. It doesn't work perfectly, but gets rid of a lot of the problems caused by variation in heart rate during the scan.

oh yes they did do that, thank you

100 isn't that fast. My average HR is between 84 and 97. GP's not concerned.

he didn’t say what it was he just asked me half way through if my heart rate is always this fast, I said is it over 100? And he said yes it has been the whole time, but he didn’t say how high it was

OK, they probably adjusted the machine to compensate then.

did you have a cannula in place? If so you may have been given meds to adjust it at the right time . The Doctor present will have been checking it is ok when it was being done .

Are you sure it was that high?

It would be difficult to see any monitors and you can’t wear one of your own.

yes I had a canulla in so I guess if they thought it was too high they would have gave me something to lower it, I couldn’t see what it was he just said to me it was over 100 the whole time
