A friend asked me yesterday if it’s possible to identify when his breathlessness is caused by asthma or when it’s caused by his heart problems. Can anyone help?

Hello you,
Yes it is and this can be done by listening to the chest, { so my Heart Nurse tells me } the chest makes certain noises that are completely different depending on which one it is.
But having said that your friend maybe suffering from both, but in all cases they need to seek help.
I use my GTN spray when I have a tight chest as well as any angina pains { which since the pacemaker being fitted are almost nothing } I was told by my Heart Nurse that this was ok to do as long as I followed the instructions { sit down etc }
It works better than the inhaler they gave me { tight chest, I don't have asthma or any other bronchial problems }
Hope any of the above is of help.
Take care
hi if your friend is taking inhalers as prescribed / instructed then it may not be the asthma or the asthma has changed? If asthma is well controlled then it’s worth seeing someone about the breathlessness,
I am asthmatic but never had asthma attack, i feel my asthma is under control because I tend to struggle when have a cold / cough or feel congested but if take brown inhaler as prescribed daily then coughing / wheezing sound don’t occur.
My breathlessness therefore is due to heart.
either way best to be checked and in meantime ensure asthma treatment followed.
Hopefully nothing of concern.
