Hi EveryoneJust been told that saunas can help with cardiovascular disease, does anyone know if this is true or not and if it is should you just spend a certain amount of time in one? Also would it be wet heat or infrared. Thanks for any information.

This subject was covered a few weeks ago. The conclusion was that they can be dangerous for hearties.

Most saunas have signs warning against using them if you have a heart condition... that would be a hard pass from me.

I haven't seen the thread others are referring to, but I take a sauna whenever possible (more than once a week). I did see an eminent heart surgeon on you tube saying saunas are very good for the heart. So I guess you might be advised to ask an expert, or give it a go and see how you feel. I don't have a cold shower afterwards and stay in for 15 minutes.

my heart surgeon advised against saunas after I had my AVR. Can’t say I miss them 🤷‍♀️

I presume that saunas cause dilation of the superficial blood vessels in the body so altering your BP etc. I would check with your cardio team!

The sweating you experience during a HA makes me not fussed if I never see a sauna again.

Hi l had cabg last September and went to my local pool which has a hydrotherapy pool. It felt hotter than normal and l couldn’t exercise too well at all. This week l went in the normal temp pool and exercised very well, then l went into the hydro pool to relax. The heart pills l now have to take make me get quite hot at times. We have natural hot pools here and there are notices that anyone with a heart condition should not spend very long in them.

I would advise checking with a health professional about you individual problems and whether it’s ok.

I didn’t and went ahead knowing it could be problematic and I was the start of my heart going crazy . Maybe coincidence but ever since my heart rate has been dropping through the floor and shooting up. Using a steam room was the only change in my life. No Illness or other factors .

Be careful

My understanding of extreme temperature therapy such as saunas and ice baths is that they are great for your health and great for healthy hearts. For people with existing heart conditions to be very cautious and check with the doc first. I know from experience that both saunas and ice baths have a direct effect on the heart. I also know my local sauna over the years has had many deaths with my friend the local gym instructor regularly finding these dead bodies. Well she found 2 in the sauna and 1 upstairs in the gym. So yes, best to check first.
