Wow. You must have read my Mind :) I was going to ask that later. I have two Mechanical Valves, (Mitral and Aortic). I am on Warfarin but going to the Anticoagulant Clinic tomorrow so I am going to ask if I can possibly change. I hope I can but am not relying on their Answer. I have a feeling it's going to be No!!!

I’m having artificial valves done on 16 January. Is it likely that I can be kept on Apixaban rather than switch over to warfarin?

Hello Sally. I had never been on an Anticoagulant before, but I was told by my Surgeon, Consultant and at the Warfarin Clinic where I go, that Warfarin is the only Drug that has been fully 'Approved' suitable for Mechanical Heart Valves. There are Trials Ongoing but, as yet, it is Warfarin. It MAY be different for you *depending on Age and Medical Background', so I would recommend talking it over with either your Surgeon or Consultant. Hope that helps a little :)

Hi, Probably not what you want to hear, but, Warfarin is the only anticoagulant for mechanical valves, no other anticoagulants have been tested and approved for use in the UK.

Kind Regards

I asked the question myself on here out of curiosity. I've been on Warfarin nine years as I have two mech valves and ask my Cardiologist every now and again, to no avail.

One of the responses I received, indicated that trials were ongoing in the US, so you never know, it may change in the future.

Yes you never know do you? I will definitely take a look at that Link so thank you plus you've saved me asking at the Clinic :)

I think those trials have been ongoing since I had my valve done in 2013 so don't hold your breath.

HI Heedio. I just wanted to say that you were quite correct in what you said about Warfarin. I asked myself at the INR Clinic today, not that I didn't believe you, : ) just out of curiosity! Apparently, if you have Tissue Valves and taking into account the Individual's Personal Medical History it is a different Story but with Mechanical Valves it is only Warfarin at present! :)

in reply to ParrotLover22

Hi Parrotlover, It does no harm in asking. Yes, Tissue valves, my first replacement Aortic was a tissue, have to say my favourite valve, med free and happy 😊, but long gone now 😭.

Was it really? :). I just went along with the Surgeon who did the Op. He went ALL through the Pro's and Con's but Mechanical were his Preference, for me, at least. Warfarin is the only downfall but there you are, I can't do much about that now! I am SO much better than I used to be so I can't complain. Hope you are keeping well anyway :)

Hi there Warfarin friends!

I’m considering either a Ross procedure (which is a tissue valve) but carries more operational risk up front, or a mechanical valve which is less risk but I have to have warfarin.

What do you think? How bad is taking warfarin regularly? I’m worried about bleeds.

Thank you!

Rich
