I hope everyone is feeling better now that it's raining. have not posted for a while just been cruising along taking my meds and adding more health conditions to my list, arthritis, peripheral neuralgia and now a femoral hernia which the surgeon has told me to decide if want the op or not I am struggling with that.I then got a letter from my cardiologist my cholesterol is up to 6.4 and I have been told to cut down on sugar and fat also double my statins to 40 mg a day. Here lies my problem I know a lot you are on the Mediterranean diet I had a look but I can't eat veg, brown bread and I tried brown rice once and it was hard and horrible.I like any kind of meat or fish, I could cut out cheese which I love and change to half fat butter and milk but I can't think of anything else. I don't eat spicy food, chips or takeaways. I am 8 st 2 and have quite severe osteoporosis , apologies for the long post char.

Morning char,

Sorry your having problems. I follow a Mediterranean diet like lots of us. Do you like pasta? I have found orzo pasta, it’s a bit like rice very small grains but I love it. I cook it with a stock cube. Also eat noodles, can make a meal out of them and a piece of salmon. Tend to eat fish 4/5 times a week love tuna have found a good buy at Iceland 3 packs of fish for £10 they have lots of choice. Their mackerel is good lots of omega 3.

Now I am on my own am having to work out my eating habits, cooking to much!

Take good care

Hi I hope you are keeping ok I was so sorry to hear about John. I have heard of orzo but never tried it I will definitely pop it on the shopping list, I am fine with fish it's just trying to get something to go with it, I can eat totties but they are not my favourite unless it's with mince, I think because I am thin I just have never bothered about my eating habits and I would definitely say sausages and bacon are my downfall along with cheese, I will just need to live without them, porridge instead hmm!, being a veg hater is a big problem although I love tomatoes, mushrooms, carrots and onions, I don't eat mayo or any sauces I suppose that's a bonus char x

Put some mushrooms in with the orzo and even tomatoes, chopped up. Spring onions too. Turns into a one pot meal! I am ok, learning how to be on my own! Some days better than others. Trying to go through Johns clothes can only do a bit and then I have to leave it! Did a bit this morning but have walked away!

Hope you can get your head round the diet I know it can be very difficult.

That sounds lovely I will definitely have to go and buy some, I mentioned it to steven and got a strange look and a what is that? never heard of it 😂 well he will soon, I am such a plain or boring as I have been told I won't eat Indian food not even pakora or naan bread give me pie and beans or a Morton's roll with square sausage and onions any day but yes I must change my bad habits I have been told. I am thinking about you it must be so difficult especially with the family being a distance away, take care I hope your own health is all right at the moment char xx

Morning char,My health is ok, had an echo in June one of my numbers was down but only in line with the age of my pigs valve! Craig was still here from Australia so he was able to have a conversation about my health and what happens when I need a replacement valve. Have to be honest felt like the roles had been reversed and I was the child as they discussed my health as if I wasn’t there! Must admit he made me smile.

I had orzo last night, remember to boil the water before you put it in as you would with normal pasta. I did chicken stock cube shallot broccoli and mushrooms, once it was simmering added the orzo had that with a piece of tuna that I cooked on the griddle pan, very tasty.

That's great he was here for the hospital, I think I do that with mum talk to folk for her, she is 93 and still going strong, my echo was fine just the cholesterol was the problem hopefully I can get it down for my next appointment, I am glad everything is ok with you just now it's an ongoing worry with heart health. Char xx

Oh dear. I don’t eat any meat and hardly any cheese at all but I’m still putting on weight. However GP says they’re not worried about my weight. We have been eating whole meal pasta for a long time now. It’s tastier and more filling than white and it’s much better for you. I know what you mean about brown rice. I can’t stand the stuff. Try different whole meal or rye breads. If they’re made with sourdough they’re tastier so you won’t need much butter. If you do have cheese try the string ones as you’ll use less of it because it’s tasty. I find less rather than none for butter. I hate the spreads and they are terrible on crackers as they are water based so the crackers become soggy. I hope you find these tips useful.

Thank you for your tips, I have never tried wholemeal pasta it sounded too healthy for me 😅 I hate spread as well but I take far too much butter! I will just have to spread it thinner. I will try sourdough bread as my stomach objects to wholemeal and seeded stuff, I think it will be trial and error as I don't want to lose any weight, ta char

You can also try piccalilli or chutney instead of butter if your having a ham sandwich. Wafer thin ham of course and not too sweet chutney.

Thank you unfortunately I can't eat anything pickled not even my mum's favourite branston, I am such a plain person when it comes to food, no tomato, brown sauce or mayo, just white bread, butter, meat or cheese, hence the reason I have created my own problems and my friends think it's so boring 🙄 which it probably is and unhealthy as well. Try a mix of white and wild rice but cook it longer than usual. Brown rice needs twice as long as white rice too. Sweet potatoes instead of ordinary ones
